Hi there everyone...
Has anyone else had this problem? I order the DVD/CR-RW from Newegg.com, got it, plugged it in in place o my old DVD-ROM drive, same settings, everything. However, it would not read any CD-ROMs. I could occasionally get it to give me a directory, but that's it. So I sent it back for repair. Newegg.com quickly sent me a replacement drive, however this one is doing pretty much the same thing. I dove in to a deeper investigation and strangely, the drive will read DVDs and will write CD-R(W)s, but it can't read what it writes (the written CD can be read easily from another computer however). I've tried upgrading my VIA hyperion drivers, making it the only device on its IDE channel, switching from master to slave, changing to PIO mode, and nothing makes any different. Again, I was able to boot a couple of times where it came up and read CDs fine, but then I'd screw the drive in place, and fire the system up again, and it wasn't working again. I checked my power supply voltage which is solid at 4.95 and 12.7 volts respectively. It seems wildly improbably to get two bad drives in a row, what am I doing wrong? My old hitachi DVD-ROM plugs back in and works like a charm.
Any help would be appreciated.
