My son's school had purchased a number Dell Dimension 3100 a few years ago and I noticed that one of the computers (and subsequently, most of the computers) were infected with viruses. I created a slipstream version of XP SP3 for them as each computer has its own authentication code. However, I was unable to get the drive to read the disc. It didn't even acknowledge that there was a disc in the drive. I tried the disc in another computer and it worked, so I know that it wasn't a bad burn. I placed a commercial software CD in and it was able to recognize the disc. The drive is a TSSTCorp TS-H492C DVD ROM CD-RW drive. From other posts, it appears to have the driver incorporated into the OS and there is no firmware upgrade.
I'm quite a bit puzzled by this and would like very much to have an answer to this problem as updating this computer was very tedious and time consuming and there are 18 other computers waiting in the wings. And I suppose the school would like to see the drives working.
Thanks for the help.
