I have been using DVDshrink to make backup DVD copies, but lately have experienced a lot of read errors on newer DVDs. On the recommendation of a friend I switched to DVDfab recently, and am trying to learn my way around DVDfab Platinum 126.96.36.199.
I've the PC I'm using is an oldish Gateway with Windows XP sp3 and a Sony DRU810XL usb burner. I've updated to the latest firmware and run the Sony Drive Check software to make sure I had no issues with the burner. I did get a read error, but Sony indicated the problem was with the Memorex DVD-R media. I've since switched to TDK DVD-R (DVD-5) and TDK DVD+R DL (DVD-9). I could not find any Verbatim media in the stores in the small town in which I live.
I tried to copy a DVD of The Defiant Ones this morning. The first attempt using Full Disc mode resulted in a DVD which had intemittently bad quality and the added features would not play. On the second attempt I set PathPlayer to always run and set the burn speed at 2.4x. That backup seems to play fine - as well as the original.
So my next project was a backup for the new Narnia DVD (Prince Caspian) using Full Disc mode and the same settings on a DVD9 disc. The first time, the process crashed about half way threough the burn (according to the status bar) and would not write a disc. The second attempt said the process completed successfully. When I checked the backup DVD in the player, it loaded but when I pushed "play" it told me to "Check the TV" and would not play or go to the main menu. I can see no files when I look at the disc on my PC. When I tried a third time to copy Prince Caspian in Clone DVD mode, DVDfab told me there was a read error and could not open the original DVD.
So am I doing something incorrectly in trying to use DVDfab? Or is there something about Prince Caspian that is causing the problem? Or do I really have something wrong with my Sony DVD burner?
Any suggestions or experience will be appreciated.
