Problems Burning DVD's with Philips DVD+/-RW

Hi there peeps, I’ve got a noodle scratcher for all you DVD+/-RW experts…

I bought a Philips PBDV1628B DVD+/-RW (bulk, bare) in Jan. It functions perfectly well as a CD writer and I have had no problems with burning data/music onto CD’s and accessing them with multiple devices.

My problems lie with using the drive to read and write DVD’s. More specifically the only DVD’s it will read properly are DVD videos, which I play with Power DVD. The drive will not read any of my DVD games properly - sometimes displaying part of the data, sometimes not even acknowledging the disk is inserted.

As for writing DVD’s - I have never been able to write one successfully with this drive. I have used lots of different software such as Win DVD Creator, Blaze Media Pro, Deep Burner, Nero 6 and Nero 7 - each time i am getting an error at the burning stage of the process.

I have tried using 3 different types of media, firstly Mr DVD DVD-R, then Sony DVD-RW (which the drive didn’t detect was inserted) and finally Philips DVD+RW - all of which caused Nero to return an error at the burning stage of the process, apart from the Sony discs which the drive didn’t event acknowledge.

I have emailed Philips customer care and they told me to reinstall my current Windows service pack, update the device with the latest drivers and then uninstall and reinstall Nero.

After doing this I still got the same errors. So at the moment I am at a total loss as to what is going wrong with this drive. I would have written it off as being broken if it hadn’t been for the CD writing and DVD video playing functions working seamlessly.

If anyone could suggest anything that could be the cause of this problem then I would be enormously grateful - or if anyone could confirm that it is broken, then I can happily commit it to the shooting range!

Here is the Nero log and some other info about my machine…

Hi slitface and welcome to CDF

Sure looks like your burner doesn’t like the media your using ,
Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) and you’ve mentioned also that it won’t recognize Sony branded media …
I would probably check if a f/w update is available , can search the Philips forum or philips website …
Can check what firmware is presently installed if you have ex nero info tool , if not can open Device Manager if using XP and double click on drive then open " details tab " , should list f/w version there …

#3

Hi Slitface (nice nick  )

Certainly looks like a media problem, at first glance. Mr. DVD are plain crap, don’t know why it wouldn’t see the Sonys…and Philips can be good, depending on who made them.

A firmware update may help, but as Kissparo said, first we need to know which firmware you have!

Could this be causing a problem?

C:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\GEARAspiWDM.sys

Just that I’ve seen it mentioned when people have been having problems, don’t know much about it myself…

#4

Ok, thanks for the feedback kissparo, i have checked the firmware and it seems to be Q2.2, which is the latest available firmware for my drive at the moment. However i have refreshed it, but sadly still no luck.

Thanks for pointing out that medium error tho, now i have a new avenue to explore - i was wondering whether there might be sum gunk on the lens or sumthing? I was trying to avoid taking it apart because of invalidating the warranty, but i think it might be time to get the screwdrivers out.

I find it stange that it won’t work with Philips media tho, being a Philips drive and all.

#5

Hi Arachne,

I checked out that GEARAspiWDM.sys and it appears to be somthing that comes with iTunes. I’ve tried removing it and then burning and also updating it then burning, but no difference, thanks anyway tho

#6

Ahhh, gotcha :)…and as for those Philips discs, sometimes they use good manufacturers, and sometimes not so good (then they just slap the “Philips” label on 'em - same goes for Mr. DVD)
