CMC: 16x DVD+R to become mainstream discs in Q4

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that CMC Magnetics, one of the worlds largest DVD media manufacturer has said that it expects that 16x DVD+R discs will become mainstream in the fourth quarter of 2004. The prediction was made by CMC chairman Robert Wong.

Wong predicted that the OEM price level for 16x DVD+R will drop from the current US$ 0.80 per disc to US$ 0.60-0.70 next quarter. Global demand for 16x DVD+R discs is expected to rise from 1.6 billion discs in 2004 to 4.0 billion discs in 2005.

The advanced technology involved in making 16x DVD+R discs requires development costs of more than NT$ 1 billion, which provides a competitive advantage for the top makers, Wong indicated. Second-tier and small makers will be forced to merge with leading makers or withdraw from competition, Wong predicted.

Many of us are waiting for 16x DVD recordables and DVD DL discs. When all of these will become available in huge quantities their prices will certainly drop. However the technology used in these products (Certainly in dual layer DVD+R's) seems at the moment too complicated for smaller factories that used to put pressure on the media market and therefor price drops could be taking some time.
