Problem with Sony DW-Q58A

I’m a bit new to these forums, but was wondering if i could get some assistance. I usually try to fix these kinds of problems on my own, but I found that I just loose my patience when it comes to debugging my burner.

Basically, the issue is that since yesterday, my burner started creating nothing but coasters. This just came out of the blue. I know that most of the time people say that it is the media that’s the problem, but I’ve been using the same exact media for about a year now (with this drive), and have produced 0 coasters until now. I use Nero Burning Rom 7, but also tried the final version of DVD Decrypter. It all started when I was trying to burn an image, which ended up taking over an hour to burn half the disc (image is ~2.5GB). I lost my patience and aborted the process, but it would not stop. So after a while I hard booted. That’s when all the problems arose.

I have had the UYS3 firmware for a while now, and had plenty of successful burns with it. After reinstalling the same firmware did not fix the problem, I flashed the UYS2 firmware, but to no avail. I decided to reformat my computer (since I was planning to do it anyway), and the drive seemed ok after I did a simulation burn. However, when I tried to do an actual burn, it crashed (error logs below). I got a bit frantic, since I just spent the whole previous day reinstalling windows … so I ran the EEPROM Utility. First I backed up my EEPROM, and then used the reset learnt media option. I also reflashed the UYS3 firmware. I was able to burn another image (~4.2 GB) using DVD Decrypter, but when I tried to make a copy of that disc on another computer, it gave a read error.

I’m a bit stumped at what to do next. Is there any hope for this drive? I use several different types of media, including Ridata 8x DVD+R, Sony 8x DVD-R, and Fuji DVD-/+RW (I’ll try to get the actual part numbers). I do want to stress that all of these worked flawlessly until this all started.

In any case, I know what I’ve said here isn’t as technical as most of you would like, but I’ll try to get some graphs and tests in later. Right now I’m a bit heated at the fact that I won’t be able to burn anything for a while … not to mention a total waste of two days. I know I’m a total newb at this, and I appologize for doing mostly venting and not as much assisting. Below are 2 nero logs that I got when trying to burn a disc:

Just as an update, I zipped up one of the iso files that were causing problems, and burnt them to a Ridata dvd as a “data disc”. I attached the Nero CD-DVD report, and it showed a quality score of 95. So, question is, what is the problem? Are my image files corrupt? Is nero not good with burning images? Do my previously posted log files show a problem with the burner or the disc? I would definitely prefer burning images as opposed to burning a data disc containing an image file … especially since I wanted to make a bootable dvd. Any help/ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Turn off disc at once.

jhtalisman: I will try this when I get back from work. Could I ask why this would be causing issues?

Most computers cannot handle it. There are alot of people who come here asking the same ?'s about failed burns with Nero, and usually this or bad media is the answer.

Ritek isn’t the best media, but at least you are using + and not - (- is known for horrendous degrading).

Burning a file from your hard drive takes alot less resources than encoding and burning at the same time.

Thanks for the quick answer.

From what I’ve read in these forums and elsewhere, I’m starting to lean towards my dvd burner being the issue. My computer is fairly powerful (specs below), so I doubt that is the problem. And going with the fact that I have used all of these discs for a while now, I’m not too sure it’s a media issue (although I did order a spindle of 100 Verbatim DVD+Rs anyway).

I’m still at work, so I have not been able to do any tests yet, but the burner that I have on my work laptop is a similar model to the one I have at home. I popped in a blank Staples DVD+R (InfoTool didn’t show Manufacturer), and opened an iso image. I am not able to change the Disc-at-once option, since the drop-down box is disabled (greyed out). This was with the same version of Nero. The only time I was given the option to change from Disc-at-once was when I chose to burn a cd. I’ll confirm this with my home laptop soon.

I was wondering if there is an EEPROM available from a brand new DW-Q58A. I understand that if I restore such an EEPROM and revert to the original firmware, the drive should be back to the settings it had initially (barring hardware failures). Is this correct?

NOTE TO ADMINS: I just realized that this thread should probably be in the " LiteOn DVD Burner / Sony DVD Burner" sub-forum. I do not want to make duplicate posts, so could this thread be moved over?

First, your copy of Nero is pretty outdated.

Second, check the box beside “finalize disc”. Then the disc-at-once once dropdown should not be greyed out.

I checked the “finalize disc” option box, but the “Disc-at-once” was still grayed out.

I wouldn’t say that my version of Nero is outdated, but they do have a new patch for 7. I’ll download that when I get home soon. However, I highly doubt (yes, I know I’m not an expert) that this is the problem, since I still had issues using other software for my burns.

Preferably, I could revert my drive to the original firmware and EEPROM. But from what I understand, there’s no real “reset” of the EEPROM. When people say “reset”, they mean to revert to an older version that was backed up. Since I only gained knowledge of this after the problem arose, I do not have any good backups. Doing the equivalent of reformatting the PC and reinstalling windows would be great, but that seems easier said than done with these things.

I do appreciate your help jhtalisman

UPDATE: I installed Nero 7.2.7.0, on my work laptop but the Disc-at-once option does not change (no matter what combination of check boxes I use). I will install it on my home laptop as well. Going home now … sure has been a long day …

You should be able to find older revisions of the firmware on Sony’s website.

P.S. That didn’t look like Nero 7. I guess you are using classic Windows style.

So I came back home, and did a test burn again after cleaning off the lens of the burner with a dustblaster. Burn went through successfully using a Ridata DVD+R. It was from the same stack as the one that turned into a coaster (from my second log on the original post), as well as several others. I don’t know if I should take this as a good sign … since the next one will probably fail with my luck. Anyway, I’m waiting for my Verbatim discs … but will do a few other test burns.

I’d love to just put this aside and say everything’s fixed, but I didn’t do anything … which is what bothers me, since I have no way of knowing if the issue will come back or not.

I did a disc quality test of the successful burn, and got a score of 84. Is this good enough? Anyway, I’ll do some more tests. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I don’t know if that Sony is a reliable scanning drive, but I would suggest scanning at either 4x or 8x. You should at least get more consistent results.
