Problem with Phillips 8x on 1633S

I have my 1633s now for a while and have always used the firmwares from codeguys on my media.

I also use to buy Phillips 2.4 and 4x media and never did have any problems with Phillips media. Really a very good quality.

But with my 1633 burner I wanted faster media and bought 8x Phillips and from that moment I started to have problems. The DVD’s are not readible in any standalone DVD player and they do read in my computer but also sometimes with problems. The firmware I used was " BS41".

So I changed firmware to “BS0S” and burned on a Verbatim 8x media (also very good quality media) and no problems here… so I thought it can be the firmware, because I read on other forums of people using Phillips 8x media without problems.

So now I started burning my 8x phillips again on “BS0S” and again… problems :frowning:

Do other people use this media on a 1633s and do you have problems with it?
A friend of mine used 1 Phillips disc from me to test if there was a problem with the batch I got, but on his 401s@811 there was no problem whatsoever on 8x burning.

I just tried to play a burned movie, but it didn’t work well in the standalone player, tried to rip the DVD again to my HDD with DVD Decrypter, but it keeps retrying to read the disc without succes. So it’s really screwed up.

:frowning:

@relex
Welcome:). MID= Media Identification. Every manufacturer gives every different disc type it produces a unique number/letter combination to identify it. This is different from the retail brand-name. Retail-brand-name suppliers can and often do change their manufacturing supplier due to costs, quality and other concerns. For example TDK(retail-brand-name supplier) has been known to market 4x+R discs that have an MID of “RICOHJPNR01” or “MCC002” or “TDK001” or “CMC MAG F01”,all made by different manufacturers, all of which vary in quality. Yes, it is a bit confusing…

You can also check your burn results with Kprobe 2.4.2 BLER scans(scanned at 4x scan speed the forum standard for comparison). Kprobe will also identify the disc MID. You can read Interpreting PI/PO error scans to find out what these graphs mean. PI/PO is now referred to as PI/PIF. Roughly, PImax<280; PIFmax<4. Attaching disc quality scans to your post of the offending discs will help us help you. :iagree:

I bought these on www.cdrwinkel.nl and the media code is really different then stated on their site!

When I look @ http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php then I see for Phillips discs with this media code the following conclusion:

Plays on 9 DVD Players
Plays not on 3 DVD Players
Burn Reliability is Mixed
DVD Reliability is Mixed
PC Reliability is Mixed
Console Reliability is Mixed

@ relex
I would return them and for about the same price, get the Fuji 8X+R(Yuden000T02)(NOT the Hyundai>T02s…they’re FAKES!) or save a few (insert unit of currency:)) and get the Platinum 8X+R (RICOHJPNR02). You will be happier with either of those excellent media types(IMHO).

#9

yeah, I saw those Fuji’s with the Yuden media code… they must be good

But I just don’t understand… thought that all Phillips DVD media came from their own factory and were all good media… guess not :s

#10

Still strange that the Phillips 8x burned well on a 401@811 and was also playable on standalone.

By the way, the Yuden000T02 isn’t that good. Verbatim’s media have a consistent good result and perhaps I should go for the MCC 003 mediacode. There are also Datasafe discs with this mediacode and are much cheaper then my Phillips media.

DAMN: no I see, people who also have problems with the MCC003 mediacode with a 1633s with the BSOC firmware.

I really think the firmwares for the 1633s SUCK bigtime :a

#11

@ relex
Don’t overlook the RICOHJPNR02’s…they are excellent and can be oversped in some cases. I was looking for the RICOHJPNR01’s(my favorite) under the 4x section, and they can be burned at 8x(or above!), but the site couldn’t guarantee R01’s, they can be swapped with RitekR03’s which aren’t great like ricoh r01 or r02’s.

As for firmwares, you also can choose from the many 1653 firmwares. It does take work to find the right combo of firmware/media and that is sad…

God bless my 851@832.CG3E and ricohjpnr01 and the C0deguys!

#12

yeah the richjpn are great, i think i have the best scans using that media  then ty media

#13

Check media forum before write any conclusion about TY,RicohJpn and Philips (MID) http://forum.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=33

#14

Well I did do a scan on the Verbatim MCC003 media which I burned with my 1633s, and I think my burner is just crap. look @ the results… one of the best media out there, Is my burner deffective or what? I’ll scan a Phillips 4x media too (which works just fine)…

#15

Here are the results of the Phillips 4x media which always did a good job.

I conclude out of these results that my 1633s can’t burn quality discs @ speed higher then 4x :a

Is it advisable to return my 1633s to my dealer and just buy a nec3520… ?

#16

Hi, I also buy my DVD+R from cdrwinkel.nl.

And have tested several mediacode’s from them, with different firmware.
The Fujifilm+R YudenoooT02 gives far out, the best result, using BSOS.
Burning speed 8x

#17

What kind of results do you get? But what I said before a friend of mine with a 401s@811s burns those Philips DVD’s just fine and the verbatim’s too, only on my burner they suck ass… :frowning:

ps: I am now trying the CTSJ firmware for the 1653 and keep you posted about the results.

#18

Well the results of the CSTJ on the Philips DVD’s still suck bigtime. The results are worse then with the Verbatim (see some posts up). And again at the beginning and at the end of the disc the worst results… but this firmware does a better job then the original 1633 firmware. Only its still not good enough to play well on standalone players.

So what to do??? bring back that 1633 and get another liteon model? or another brand or what?

#19

@ relex
Did you reset your learnt media memory after flashing with CSTJ? You obviously have a burner that needs more fussing with than most. Exchanging for an NEC may not solve your problems. The NEC isn’t neccessarily an out-of-the-box burn-everything-excellent burner…it also needs fussing with, as do most, if not all burners. That is just how it is for now with this ‘newer’ technology. You/we are on the forefront as the upaid(we are actually paying) test subjects to get this stuff to work. Manufacturing consistency still isn’t happening as evidenced by every drive getting different results. Sad but true. Thank goodness for people like C0deKing  .

The NEC also has some shortcomings as well, like no error scanning capabilities. Just have a look at their forum to see what is happening. However, you will probably get more consistently good results from a wider range of media with the NEC and modded firmwares.

Unfortunately, you have not found the right combo of firmware/media to get your 1633/1653 to work well. If you feel like trying to get your 1633 to work, try the RICOHJPNR01s or R02s. If those fail to work well for you, I would be the first to suggest a new burner for you(like the NEC or Benq). If having to buy only one type of media doesn’t sit well with you, or if you have just had enough of Liteon, then exchange it. You certainly have a pile of failed burns as evidence for an exchange.

As I posted before I also tried Verbatim MC003, those are really good discs, but the result was terrible…

I didn’t do a reset of my memory, is that really necessarily? Because when you do a normal flash with original firmware a reset isn’t performed as well…

And how do I do it?
