Problem with new DW1640 (Ritek R03 only 4x, and RW Disks)

I have a Problem with my new 1640.

I have a few Ritek R03-02 Disks. They should write at 8x, but they do only at 4x. Even when I enable overspeed, 4x is maximum. In my DW1620 no problem at 8x.

Another Problem with my +RW discs. I have here some Ricoh and Philips 4x +rw discs. When I burn to them, I need to wait another 10 minutes after the burn before I can put them out the drive. The LED is blinking till then. Also on my 1620 no problem.

FW was BSLB and immediatly flashed to BSMB.

Any suggestions?

Hi
You could try this. Flash back to a firmware that doesn’t support SolidBurn etc. Don’t use this, reflash to BSMB. This should have the affect of clearing out things. If using SolidBurn remember that the learning process does take at least 3 > 4 burns. Don’t use OverSpeed. In CDSpeed you could do a burst rate test, this should be around 23/24 Mbs & is a good indicator that connections, dma etc are OK.
When your using +RW discs, format them first with the 1640. Even if their blank.(If your using bitsetting leave +RW set to +)
Let us know how it goes.

Ritek R02 is not directly supported by this firmware (or any other version), so thats why it shows only 4x. Ritek R03 is supported at 8x (revisions 1 and 2). FYI Ritek is considered poor quality media. If you want to burn Ritek R02 at higher speeds, you can use MCSE (look in the stickies) and add that firmware by renaming another (useless/unused) media code with the Ritek R02 and then swapping the write strategy with a quality one like MCC 03, T02, or T03.

Its possible that your R03 disc is a different revision.

Thx for the suggestions!

Btw. my Ritek are R03 Rev.2.

I flashed BSGB as CVT and then again to BSMB.

Afterwards I set Solidburn on and put a fresh Ritek R03 disc in. So the first 2 discs I wrote burned 8x succesfully, but then the third disc only burned 4x. And the end of the third disc is very bad.

Also interesting:
Sometimes, CDSpeed starts scanning at 1,78x instead of 3,??x. Eject and reload the disc fixes this.

In the attachements there are the Scans of the 3 discs in burned order.

Here is the ImgBurn Log of the first disc:

I have done one burn on a Verbatim 16x (MCC004) which turned out very good, but the Riteks came also out 2 times good.

As for the +RWs I will do a full erease of all my old +RWs. Hope this helps.

Burned another one at 8x (choosen, in fact it was again 4x). Look at the low scan speed. Is this normal?

This disc is OK. But is it normal that Solidburn lowers the speed even if the medium is OK? (see the first 2 burns)

Two things. You should do quality scans with BenQ drives at 8x. Also be sure to eject the disc after burning before scanning. Just my $0.02.

8x and MAX at scanning is the same (on both 1620 and 1640) also I did eject the disc, but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Its again scanning that slow.

Inserted a MCC004 media burned previously, that scanned normal speed.

TOo good I only have a few left of this crappy Ritek.

But more interestingly:
What about only 4x writing on 8x media? Anyone experienced same?

I’ve noticed that it can take 5 or 6 burns before Smartburn finally decides how to burn the discs. I’ve seen it slow down the burn for the first few discs until it decides how to properly burn them.
