Problem with my new Pioneer 109 - pleaes help

Hi I am new and need your help,

I just purchase a Pioneer 109, and I have probem reading and writing CD/DVD. When I put in a CD/DVD the DVDRW makes strange noise and just read read read then stop. I try nero 6.6.0.xx to burn a CD or DVD, nero returns error saying my DVD Writer can't use this media (I am using Verbatim DVD-R 8X)

I already upgraded my firmware to the newest version. Set Primary Master UDMA5 and Secondary Master UDMA4. Still same thing.

After 2 days, I took the DVDRW back to the shop. The shopkeeper tested it in front of me and it works…read ok, burn ok. He told me it is possible my IDE cable is no good or my Power Supply is not providing enough power to the DVDRW.

I bought a new IDE cable 80way, installed on my PC. Still doesn’t read or write.

Now I donno what to do, do you think it is a problem with my Power Supply? But I think if my power supply is no good the computer should start at all. Also before I buy this DVDRW I was using 1 DVDROM + 1 CDRW and it was ok.

Dear all big brothers, please look at my case and provide some help.

I plan to take the Power Supply from my office PC (Dell) and try it and see if it works tonight.

Thank you so much.

You didn’t mention how you have the drive installed. It should be connected as Master on your Secondary port, ideally set to “Master” rather than “Cable Select.”

Thx LasVegas,

I tried 2 different types of installations:
  1. Connected DVDRW as Secondary Master and HDD as Primary Master
  2. Connected DVDRW as Primary Slave and HDD as Primary Master

Both yielded the same result.

When I place a CD audio or DVD moive into my existing DVD-Rom it takes about 4-5 seconds before the title of the disc shows up in the E: tree

But when I insert the same CD or DVD into my Pioneer 109 it spins but after 10 seconds the drive stops but nothing shows up on E:

The above was also tested by the shop but it is ok at the shop. Very Strange. Now I have a DVDRW that should be functioning just not on my computer. Damn

Sometimes Win2k or XP will continue to associate a partricular drive letter with a Hardware ID that is no longer in the system, thus seeing two devices on the same letter or hanging etc. I’ve experienced this not only with Hard Drives but specifically when trying to install my new (at the time) Pioneer DVR-107. Try first of all going to Device manager and uninstalling the burner, then reboot. Let it reinstall then reboot. If that doesn’t work shut down, reconnect the old DVDrom (with the burner removed) boot up, let that install, reboot, then uninstall the DVDrom in Device Manager, shut down, physically remove the DVDrom, boot up again without ANY DVD unit, then shut down again, physically install the DVD-writer, then boot back up, let it install, then reboot. This final boot up should leave you with a properly installed writer.

Hi melodymaster,

I think you are right, when I checked the device manager on my WinXp after I install my DVDRW alone. I still seem to see another CDRW or CD rom....some strange AXN brand stuff...I think it could be a faluty install. I will try uninstalling everything then let windows reinstall my dvdrw for me. Hope that works. Thanks alot.

Well melodymaster,

I tried your method and uninstalled all installed DVD/CD drives and reinstalled my DVDRW only. But when there is no drive installed window seems to install something called “AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device” can be found in Device Manager.

After I reinstall my DVDRW: Device Manager shows 2 devices under DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES:

AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device
Pioneer DVD-RW DWR109

I donno how the AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device got there…everytime I uninstall it…it just comes back.

Anyway, the problem still exists…can’t read nor write.

Can anyone help?

I tried to burn a data DVD using Nero 6 and here is the log returned:

And? That’s just the VIRTUAL drive installed by Alcohol Soft!

Nero Version: 6.6.0.16

I think that’s the problem. Obsolete and outdated Nero!

Hi Chef

So that means I don’t have to worry about the VIRTUAL drive installed by Alcohol Soft right? Shouldn’t casue any problems there.

Also, I downloaded my Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.6.0.16 from Nero’s site. Shouldn’t this be the most up-to-date version? Is there a newer on that this?

Anyway, thanks for all of you who are trying to help. Really appreciate that.

Yeah, sorry. I got confused by all those Nero revisions. ?:
6.6.0.16 is the latest available.

Is your 109 in UDMA4 mode actually?
What other burning apps have you installed?

My 109 is in UDMA4 mode.

Besides Nero 6.6.0.16, I also have Alcohol120% installed.

I know there is a built-in burning software that comes with WinXp I will try to disable that in my next attempt.

I wonder if reinstalling Windows would help. Really donno what else I could do now…

Just a thought, but safe boot and delete extra stuff in device manager.

I have experienced problems related to Alcohol. I don’t know what build it was but last week a customer had problems with, you got it, his DVD writer (an old DVR-105,) burns would fail, very slow reads, sometimes bluscreens when the disc was put in (in XP-SP2). This all started after Alcohol was updated. I used System Restore to go back to before Alcohol was updated, and all the problems went away. MAYBE it was the Virtual Drive causing problems, I don’t know, but you might try unistalling Alcohol to see what happens.

I have tried everything I can think of now and still no good. I even tried to install a new Windows still same thing. Remove Alcohol, same thing. I am about to give up.

Test the drive in another computer - that’s the best way.

I already did, it works. I am guessing it is capatabiliy between my Motherboard and my DVDRW? Possible?

“I am guessing it is capatabiliy between my Motherboard and my DVDRW? Possible?”

Yes… What’s your mobo?

“But I think if my power supply is no good the computer should start at all.”

Not that simple.

Also is your ROM drive connected to the same cable as the 109? If so, unplug it and retry… (you’ve probably already done that but who knows…)

Hi Francksoy,

My mobo is MSI MS-6330 also known as K7T Turbo. Currently my bios ver is 2.2, I already checked MSI's site the latest bios version is 3.7 unfortunately the site also stated that ver 2.2 is considered a Exception version. Therefore, when I tried to update my bios via MSI LIVE Update the software tells me I am in no need to update my bios and my bios is already the best one.

I have already tried unplugging the ROM drive and the problem still there.

Thanks for your help.

Ben
