Based on the original story, I would have placed blame with Mandrake, but with this new information, I have to say the fault is solely LG’s for making their drives dangerously incompatible with teh ATAPI specs. What will they do next, use the soft eject command to erase the firmware?

How long before someone writes a virus to do this Intentionally?
