Problem with Fab and D/L Discs

Hi…

Just started with DVDfab and using 5.03… Tried to make a copy of the new ArmyWives Season 1. It did fairly well as a DVD-9 to DVD-R (59% I think it said)… but then I had a problem trying to use a DVD+R DL (to get 100%).

First… I had to use a couple of DVD+R DLs… it kept saying "… compatible media… " before it found one it liked. Funny part is… it did NOT write one byte onto any of the rejects.

Next, and where I’m stuck right now… it SPLIT (the original)… started burning the DVD+R DL and it said “Burn DVD completed successfully” and STOPPED… popup of “No media detected…”.

It LOOKS to ME (but what do I know)… that it burned “layer 1/split 1”… and then got mucked up with “layer 2/split 2”. I’ve clicked the OK… ejected and re-inserted the DVD+R DL… just sits there!

What’s my problem???

Thanks ALOT…
Steve

Well first off what kind of media are you using ? and burn speed ,It has been highly recommended by many people that for DL media to use Verbatim media as myself I only use Verbatim +R DL and always get excellant burns, Perhaps if you could post a burn log that would help greatly to see whats going on

Hello Jimbo and anyone else…

I got a suggestion to download the Beta of 5.0.3.5… and ended up with a different result now… so more frustrated. But… to answer you:

 1. Media happens to be Memorex DVD+R DL (all that Staples had)…

 2. Burn speed was whatever DVDfab does (can’t find any “configure” choices in App yet)

 3. Burn Log’s a little longer… this is from my “new issue”. Since loading 5.0.3.5… when I select SPLIT… the MyDoc/DVDfab/SPLIT folder has DISK1 @ 3.98g and DISK @ 3.49g… DVDfab’s "Non-Split Title"s come out to be… 7 files with #1, #2 going to DISK1; #3, #4 going to DISK2 and #5, #6, #7 going to BOTH… guess they are the “DVD’s menu”, FBI and Warning files?!

Anyway, when I put a blank in… it says “Media inserted is drive E: is double-layer, but the output only need single layer media. Do you want to continue writing?”

Doesn’t make sense that… I select SPLIT and it makes two 3+ gb folders… then says “don’t need over 4gb”?? Anyway, here’s the log from that:

Thanks… Steve

I don’t trust anything but Verbatim 2.4X made in Singapore. Not even if it was given to me for free.

#6

Hi Steve
Split mode always defaults to single layer media (DVD-5 size, 4.7GB). Burn speed is set on the Common Settings->Write page in a drop-down selector; do not leave it at “Recommended”, always set an exact speed. 8X for SL and 2.4X for DL are good starting points. You might want to look through the Tutorial, linked in my sig or from the Help->Tutorial link from within DVDFab. I also don’t use anything except Verbatim DL blanks. If you have a local OfficeMax, they have them as does BestBuy.

Hi Signals…

Well… thanks for straightening me out on SPLIT… went back and read the “Guide” and… TOTALLY missed the part where it (pretty clear too) said… Split=2 DVD±R. Ugh…

But now I read CLONE MODE is “Ideal for dual layer…” but I’ve tried that… using two different PCs, two different DVDRW drives, 2-4 DVD+R DL’s (but same original DVD") and getting stuck there too now.

So now… I’ve lowered the “Burn Speed” to 2x… run CLONE… tried it choosing “Copy DVD-Video Data Only”… choosing “Copy Originial IFO Files”… and choosing BOTH. It keeps complaining about "cannot open file… .isoVTS_02_0.IFO.

I’ve SEARCH’d on *.IFO (hidden/system files visible) and that file’s really not there.

I’m lost… What’s the trick to copy an original DVD movie to a DVD+R DL??? I’m going to keep trying different things with CLONE…

BTW… Is there any way to get DVDfab to “jump” right to the burning mode??? I’ve copied the original in FULL, SPLIT and CLONE mode… and all the files are sitting in MyDocs/DVDfab/temp… it’s boring to keep waiting for the original to read again?!!

Steve

If you want to try something different, I would do a full rip with DvdFab & then burn manually with ImgBurn in Build Mode, just a suggestion.

Steve
Hi Steve,

Sure, simply choose Write Data…left column on Fab’s main page.
This will burn directly, ie., no re-ripping to a temp directory.

Re: Img…the Write Data (1-step) won’t work with Img. As beef suggested, this will entail more than 1 step as you will have to utilize “build mode”.
Still, this is a solid suggestion until you figure out what 's going on.

This “cannot open file… .isoVTS_02_0.IFO”…
This must be the same file every time.
Does the movie play ok when viewed from the hdd?..say with VLC, Powerdvd, etc.,?

Try ripping another film in clone mode and use your hdd as the target.
Just choose “Copy DVD-Video Data Only” for now and don’t copy the .IFO files.

Are your other DL discs trash?..they only partially burned and failed?
Could you post the burn logs from these?

Thanks

Hi again…

Beef Barley & Dialysis… I’ll definitely try imgburn… running out of day here so probably tomorrow…

Maine… more info is:

 1. 5.0.2.0 CLONE creates an .INI and .ISO… it says “no IFO file”

 2. 5.0.3.5 CLONE creates a .I01 thru .I08… corresponds to “chapters” and a .INI… DVDfab asks for several files… I’ll see if I can add a .BMP here… Nah… that didn’t go… let me see… it seems to say “Cannot open… .I01, .I02, etc”… finally complaining about “.I08VTS_02_0.IFO”

 3. After I finish this… I’ll go back and do a FULL MODE… to see if the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS will play… more fun… not tried to play from HD before.

 4. I’ll try another DVD tomorrow… what I have is 4-5 years old… shouldn’t make a difference tho

 5. I’ve trashed 2-3 blanks on my own… when trying SPLIT… but CLONE hasn’t killed any yet… guess it wants the .IFO BEFORE it starts on the DVD!?!

Log from 5.0.3.5 CLONE (#2 above) is:

Hi Steve,

I’m a bit confused. Are you able to play back the clone rip from the hdd? The one that says it cannot open…? Sounds like the rip is bad. Could you try it with another movie please?

I think I misunderstood, you’re saying the clone mode rip(s) never even started to burn…the discs are still empty and usable?

Have you used this media (RITEK-S04-42) previously with any success at all?
They’re unreliable at best and generally…crappy.
Sorry, don’t shoot the messenger.

Re: clone mode (also if you rip to .ISO mode)
The .ISO files contain everything except the .ini files.
The .ini files just contain the layer break info.

Take for eg., the .ISO file for the movie, “American History X”.
Like so:

#13

MaineMan…

You’re confused? hehe… come on over here… atleast you’ve done this before.

Let’s see… I can NOT play the CLONEs but I CAN play the FULL DISC.

Hadn’t tried ripping another movie… will try that this afternoon.

YES… the blanks are still good… seems CLONE can’t find the files BEFORE doing anything to the DVD.

Now… what I’ve done this morning:

 1. Used DVDfab 5.0.3.5 in CLONE… ended up with 9 files… .i01 thru .i08 plus .ini… DVDfab couldn’t find ANY files; including IFO… so it didn’t go anywhere.

 2. Used DVDfab 5.0.2.0 in CLONE… ended up with 2 files… .ini and .iso… again NO IFO… so didn’t go anywhere either

 3. Used DVDfab 5.0.3.5 in FULL DISC… stopped when originial ejected… watched parts with CyberLink PowerDVD… looked good and went thru the CSS protection too.

 4. Used DVDfab 5.0.2.0 in FULL DISC… then downloaded/ran IMGBURN (suggested by Beef Barley & Dialysis1)… and ended up with what I wanted… ONE DVD… Dual Layer=Exact original… etc. So I’m HAPPY with “end result”. Even made a second one (Memorex DVD+R DL)… just to ensure the 1st Memorex wasn’t a fluke.

To answer another question… I screwed up 2 DLs playing with SPLIT, another 1-2 using/re-using in all my testing… but… when actually burning/no testing… these Memorex’s worked fine… so far

I’ll try to find some Verbatim’s both Best Buy and Office Max are 25-30 miles off… different directions… don’t get to either much.

Right now… I’m happy to get THIS copy… BUT still hoping that DVDfab can be my “one-stop-copy/burn” answer; a single app that copies DVDs (59% or Dual Layer)… skips copy protection… and does Pocket PC (iPaq here)…

Well guess that’s enough of this… need to back into DVDfab and make some notes to put in the suggestion area (thought I saw one).

Steve

Well, glad to hear Img is working well for you…it really is a great burn engine. Still, it would be nice to have the 1 click functionality.

Re:…
“1. Used DVDfab 5.0.3.5 in CLONE… ended up with 9 files… .i01 thru .i08 plus .ini… DVDfab couldn’t find ANY files; including IFO… so it didn’t go anywhere”.

Unsure what you mean DVDfab couldn’t find Any files, or it didn’t go anywhere.
Did you exit and reopen Fab and were unable to find the .ISO files?
If so, you need to click on the .ISO icon…to the far right of Source and navigate to the desired file.
(see attached image below).

If you tried this as 1 process throughout…what happened?
Any error messages, details?

When you ripped in Full Disc mode, did you try to complete the process with Fab (VSO) or go right to Img?

Try to rip a movie to the hdd (target = hdd) in clone mode.
Does it play ok? If yes, you should have no problem with burning it to a DL.
(Not to confuse you, but you won’t be able to use clone mode to re-rip the clone image [on the hdd]…note that I selected customize in the attached image).
Just navigate as I described. If it does this ok, we should be able to get Fab to burn a clone with 1 click.

Hope this helps

#15

yeah you should still be able to use this as a one step solution. and even with imgburn as burnging engine.

#16
yeah you should still be able to use this as a one step solution. and even with imgburn as burnging engine.
Hey Troy,
Maybe a matter of terminology?
I’m saying 1 click process and you’re referring to a one step solution.
While I agree that Img is an outstanding burn engine, you still have to click
"ok" subsequent to the rip and actually engage (“ok”) Img to start burning even though this all occurs within Fab. Not a big deal, but there it is.
When using VSO or nero, you can toss both discs in, click start, walk away and when you return, your bkup is done…

Am I missing something?

#17

Thats what I do Tom, put in both disc (use VSO) and walk away and come back in around 15 to 20 min and it’s all done

#18

no clicking with imgburn if you change one setting.

tools/ settings/ build/ dont prompt image details
