Problem with DVD+R DL discs

I don’t know if its the right section to post this but here i go…

I have burned DL discs a few times and never got any problem (when everything was well configured, DMA enabled for example) and yesterday i was copying a TV SERIE i bought because since it was expensive i wanted to make a copy of it to use it instead.

I copied 3 discs without any problems, using this metod:

  1. Right click on ISO mode using ISOBUSTER then clicking extract, with ANY DVD running
  2. Burn it with DVDFab Platinum selecting DVD+9 of course.

I checked those copies and all worked perfectly, and when i burned the 4th and last disk it said it the burn was completed sucessfully… however… when i insert the DVD it says its a blank dvd… i open it and no files there… and nero showtime says it cant play it or something…
I tried to make another burn and got the same results, “burn completed sucessfully” but was recognized as a blank dvd when i inserted it…

However i checked it on a home dvd and it works, and when i open isobuster to see the disk content it only shows UDF and IFO, not ISO, but all the files seems to be there…
I tried to read the “coasters” on my old PC dvd reader (not burner) and it works, showing the DISC LABEL and i can see the files inside.

I remember that before i burned this disc i was watching the original disc on nero showtime, and since it was a bit slow i changed the process priority to real time, freezing my pc so i had to press the power button till my pc shutted down, i rebooted, checked if DMA was enabled, and tried burning the disc obtaining the results i already explained…

It shouldn’t be related to that since i can read the DVD’s i copied before on my dvd burner without any problems, i think…

I used VERBATIM +R DL, never had any problem before, and the speed doesn’t matter since i have tried several speeds…
i don’t want to waste more dvds since those are fucking expensive…

Btw… i already searched information about this for hours and i never found a solution… my dvd is HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H22N and i think there are no official firmware updates for it yet, and i don’t think its really the problem…

Just so I understand you, the “blank” DL dvds that you made work in a standalone dvd player and you can open them with the dvd rom drive, but your dvd burner doesn’t show anything but a blank dvd. Is that correct?

Do the problematic dvds play in Showtime using the dvd rom drive? Or does Showtime work now with any of your dvds in any drive? In other words, have you corrupted something in Nero so that the player isn’t working correctly?

Test your burner. See if it will play any dvd using Showtime. Or try another program like VLC. Check to make sure it burns to regular dvds as well.

You might also try to open one of the “blank” dvds with DVDShrink. It is a stickler for correct dvd structure, and if it can’t open the disk, you know something is screwed up. Use the dvd rom drive for this, not the burner, since you couldn’t get the burner to recognize the disk.

I should mention that you are using a method of making DL disks that I haven’t heard of before. The usual method, if you have AnyDVD running in the background, is to make an ISO with DVDDecrypter and burn using the md5 file that is created along with the ISO. ImgBurn is the most recommended burning program for this process because it will set the layer break correctly if you use the md5 file as the input. Both Decrypter and ImgBurn are free programs by the way.

Also, stick with the Verbatim DL’s as they are good quality, and you can’t say that about any other DL media that is commonly available.

Is there some reason you do not use DVDFab Platinum to do the whole process

exactly, however, using my DVD BURNER and isobuster it shows data in UDF and IFO, not ISO (and the others two) as the other 3 dvds i burned.

yeah, they work in showtime using the dvd reader, there is nothing corrupted with nero showtime and the others 3 dvds i burned also work perfectly.

it plays any dvd except the last one, it just doesnt play the 4th dvd because its not recognized, its the same with other programs…

You might also try to open one of the “blank” dvds with DVDShrink. It is a stickler for correct dvd structure, and if it can’t open the disk, you know something is screwed up. Use the dvd rom drive for this, not the burner, since you couldn’t get the burner to recognize the disk.

I burned a DVD-R with the 4th disc and while checking with dvd shrink and nero showtime i got the 2 DL discs i had burned to work, while the disc is still shown as blank dvd on windows explorer… i have two theory for this:

  1. It was because i had installed Roxio UDF reader or something like that
  2. It was because after i installed dvd shrink it replaced the corrupted file that didn’t let me watch the disc
However, like i said, the DVD still claims to be BLANK when i insert it…

i have used dvddecrypter in the past, as well as nero recode and dvdshrink, however i once had a problem that none of those programs could pass so i tried DVDFab platinum and it could, since then i use it. About ImgBurn, i dont remember if i have used it but i haven’t had problems with the layer break i think. Oh and i use this method because when i used clonedvd2 and my discs were scratched i had to start the process from 0 (when trying to make an iso or extract the video_ts folder) because of reading problems. With isobuster i have no problems…

Also, stick with the Verbatim DL’s as they are good quality, and you can’t say that about any other DL media that is commonly available.

Actually its the only DL brand i have seen in my country, not that i have asked for others either, and its good

Here i got some screenshots so its more easy to understand…

DVD-R (correct in windows)

DVD-R (correct in isobuster)

DVD+R DL (1&2) (incorrect in windows)

DVD+R DL (incorrect in isobuster)
DISC 1:

DISC 2:

Note that the only difference on those 2 DL disks is the size…

At least they’re working in your player. But I haven’t got a clue where the extra 5.18mb came from in Disk 2. Have you compared it in size to the original?

Have you tried to use DVDFab Platinum again? I think I would use it to make a single layer disk first, just so you don’t waste a DL disk.

i always compare the size in bytes of the things i burn, however i check that by right clicking the cd/dvd and selecting properties, now that it is shown as BLANK i didn’t check the size.

And yeah, i already burned a single layer disc of that 4th dvd and it works… its not shown as blank dvd…
im almost sure that if i burn another dl disc ill get the same result…

There are two of the threads i found with this problem unsolved:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=195707
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=219962

this is an old problem and needs solution…

mmm… it looks like there is a problem with the layer break…
look at this:
December 14th, 2006
DVDFab Platinum 3.0.5.0 Updated!

ONE OF THE CHANGES INCLUDE…
Fix: Layer break is not set correctly in certain cases.
maybe its another certain case that hasn’t been solved yet…

i will try a last time with nero to see if it works…

Don’t try Nero.

Use Imgburn.

From sector 0 to about 2,000,000 i have no problems.
if i let it continue it just keep showings error, i guess its a layer break problem?

btw… does imgburn burns VIDEO_TS folders?
im not sure it does… let me check

my reason to ask this is because i cant create a .ISO file every time im going to burn a DL disc, it would take too much time… i have the video_ts folder, what should i do?

Yes, use the BUILD MODE.

oh and btw… when i try to make the .iso file, i get this window

Click on 1 row with the green “star” to set a correct LAYER BREAK for this build.

there are 2, it doesn’t matter which one i select?

ok, i selected the first one because it says 50%, 50%, but how can i burn the dvd without making a .iso first?
i always back up my movies with the VIDEO_TS folder and this is the first time i got problems…

ImgBurn doesn’t actually make an ISO first then use that to burn from. It does everything at once…

oh… i had to click the small button to change to “device output”
