Problem using gsa-h62

just bought one of these,

obviously sata connection, so just plugged it in and turned on my computer.

problem is, that i cant seem to burn anything with it.

it is reading data fine, playing movies etc… but when i try to burn either cd or dvd it just stops at between 2% and 6%.

any way that i can fix it?

Welcome to the forum

What burning software are you using? It would be useful if you could post an error log for the failed burns, to see what’s going on.

We have one of these drives in another PC and so far no problems with it.

You wouldn’t happen to have a VIA-based mobo??

its nvidia nforce mobo

as for error logs, i never looked at them, just seemed to sit on 2% ‘writing lead in’ for about 20 mins so closed it down. will do another tonight and see what happens.

nero 7 ultra edition log file.

Your Nero version is hopelessly outdated (7.0.1.2 where 7.10.1.0 is current). I would uninstall the old version completely before installing the new update.

hmmm

tried installing the bundled software (nero 7 essentials). told me to uninstall the current installation, but wouldn;t accept the serial key that was supplied with on the cd.

will give this a go though and see what happens.

i guess you are saying that the version i have may not support the burner, right?

Whether its a bug with nero info and sata burners, the log file shows all your drives have DMA off. I also wonder if this line is normal “Connected to MMC as unknown drive with class-nr : 1”. I don’t use nero anymore so I don’t have nero info to check my H62 which is running fine on my nforce4 board.

I’ve got Nero running fine with the H62N, only difference is, I’m running in IDE compatible mode in the BIOS, and don’t have nVidia drivers (Intel chipset/SATA controller here).

okay, well i went out today and bought another burner. got the gsa-h54l (with lightscribe).

that one is ide. installed that, put in the cd and installed nero that came bundled. this version of nero is 7.5.?.?

now when i open start smart and do the update bit, it downloads the update, uninstalls nero, restarts the computer and then stops! this is starting to get quite annoying.

Doh! I can’t honestly say I’ve ever bothered updating the bundled version of Nero when I’ve used it. IIRC, there was a problem awhile back with using the update function inside Nero, though I think that might have been resolved with later versions.

Have you tried just installing the bundled Nero and not updating it?

yeah, currently trying that out.

the 54l drive is working fine (burning and reading etc…) but i tried a data cd with the 62n and it is still coming up the same!!!

another annoyance is that the packaging says that it has nero express lightscribe support but i cant seem to find it. nero site shows it as being a feature on cover designer 2. the bundled software only have cover designer. ggrrr.

Ah, the LightScribe

If you haven’t done this already, try this: download and run the latest LightScribe System Software from here.

Hopefully Nero will then see it as LS, if not you may have to reinstall your bundled Nero.

already downloaded the lss and simple labeller stuff from lightscribe earlier today.

since that i have installed nero about 4 times!! yet it still doesnt give me the option.

any other program i can use for the label bit?

I personally use SureThing, though it’s pay software (with a free trial though).

I guess you aren’t using an MS driver and the driver you have isn’t reporting DMA correctly. You may be able to see it in Device Manager. Probably under SCSI. Some controllers come with a utility program that can show this. And the BIOS may show it also.

But in any case, CDspeed will do a burst rate test and I guess that would tell the story.

I just noticed that the Nero log shows my LG h62 to have DMA off, but it’s really on. I can see it in Device Manager. Mine uses a non-MS driver so it shows up under SCSI.

It seems your failure happened while doing the simulation. I guess that says something about your problem but I don’t know what. I would test by shutting off simulation and I would probably burn a CD image on my hard drive. If that’s successful I would try a real burn by burning the CD image to a CD using some other software. Like CDspeed or ImgBurn.

I use Nero 6 and I don’t see that line in my logs. Actually I don’t have any recent logs showing my LG h62. I do have some older logs and I don’t see any such line.
