Problem burning DVD'S with my Plextor760A

vbimport

#1

Hi,

Just joined the forum and have tried to search for an answer before posting.
I just upgraded from a philips optical drive to the Plextor 760A, i use Nero 7 premium to copy discs. The Plextor reads/plays both cd/dvd and will copy cd’s but when i try to copy a non protected dvd it creates an image file and asks for a blank dvd(i’ve used Taiyo Yuden/sony/fuji/TDK),at this point it says “lead-in” and maybe 5/6% completed although it never burns anything to the disc.I never had any problem with Nero before??.
I am using Firware 1.05, i don’t want to return it if theres a simple solution,
if anyone has any suggestions i’d be grateful,

Groetjes/Gruss Regards ~ David.

#2

Same mantra. Run the self test to confirm burn/read/verify. If it passes, look for sw issues like imapi service or conflicting apps, aspi, etc.

#3

Which Nero version is it? Make sure it’s the latest one …

#4

Thanks for the advice, i’m currently running tests ,i’ve spoken to Plextor who are quite willing to replace what they think may be a faulty unit,i saved the log for a failed dvd burn so that if someone sees something they think might be causing the problem they can post with advice…Kind Regards ~ David.

#5

It seems it doesn’t recognize the disc. Have you tried another brand?

#6

Hi,

I’ve tried Taiyo Yuden/Sony/TDK/Fuji and verbatim.
I don’t know whats happened but i did a write test in plextools and it all seemed o.k, i also just noticed that theres a firmware update 1.06 for the PX-760A, loaded it onto the p.c and burnt a dvd successfully!!, maybe i need to investigate a little further before returning what appears to be a fine piece of kit.I’ll see how it performs before posting again but i would be gratful for advice on the Autostrategy device, if theres a post on that please direct.

Kind Regards ~ David

#7

You had “DMA: Off”. Maybe the firmware update restored it. In any event, check out this guide: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616 (you’ll probably have to uninstall the IDE Channel in Device Manager to get out of PIO Mode into UDMA4 if it happens again).

#8

I also noticed that in the log and YES i went into the Device Manager and made sure that DMA was on, maybe it was the upgrade in firmware.
I’m a little disillusioned with my new Plextor, i really had imagined that it was trouble free after reading the reviews…helaas pindakaas as they say…

Kind regards ~ David.

#9

Losing DMA can happen. It doesn’t have to be the burner’s fault - it could be the mobo, Windows or the cable, etc. too… It’s always the first thing to check when you suspect there’s something wrong: Windows+Pause keys, Hardware, Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers — got to be in Ultra DMA Mode there for anything to work properly :iagree: .

#10

Sometimes it is Windows that switches to PIO mode if a disc contains too many errors. But don’t ask me what “too many” is in Windows’ terms … Perhaps something like

IF {
{(burntime==now) AND (sparetime==low)}
THEN PIO=ON
ELSE PIO=ON
}

#11

Hi davidpower3@tisca
Did you solve your problem ? If yes tell me how. NOW i have the same error
The hole system hangs ! It’s not the burner coz i swoped my 760 and use my 755 and a funy thing is PTP/PTP XL reports that gigarec, securec and so is not available for that drive !!

#12

Hi
and another strange thing is i can’t erase a DVD RW i can start eraseing disc but only for 22 seconds

#13

Need help again with Plextor 760A, yesterday i tried burning a dvd but it kept
failing so i took a look at the log and it had reverted to DMA OFF, i went into device manager where secondry IDE channel (Device1) says Transfer Mode
DMA if available but underneath it says Current Transfer mode PIO, please can someone talk me through clearing this Current transfer mode PIO, i’ll include the log at the end of the post but i’m almost certain this DMA is the cause.

David.

Hi David

In Device Manager, right-click your Secondary IDE channel, and click Uninstall.

Reboot, and Windows will re-detect the IDE channel (and your Plextor), and hopefully put it into the correct UDMA mode.

#15

No luck, i re-booted and it came up new hardware but when i went back into
secondry IDE channel it was telling me that now Device 0 and Device 1 both say Current transfer mode PIO Mode.

I can burn cd’s but not dvd’s, i have the latest firmware and was able to burn dvd’s recently.i have tried to burn a number of different dvd’s so it’s not as though it’s an isolated dvd, something has caused it to go into current transfer mode PIO and i can’t get it to revert back to DMA, although it does actually say Transfer Mode ~ DMA if Available…its just that it says current rensfer mode PIO underneath,
Why is it only affecting dvd’s and not cd-r’s?

If you want any additional info please ask,

David

#16

Try swapping the IDE cable out for a brand new one.

#17

Arachne,
Just re-booted and it seems to have cleared the PIO current transfer mode, just burned a dvd and the old Plex seems back to normal. Thanks for your invaluable advice.

David

P.S love the cat…we have a Blue but with green eyes.

#18

Well, that’s most odd that it didn’t sort it out after the first reboot, but I won’t complain - glad it appears to be sorted

And your cat sounds gorgeous
