Problem Burning Dual Layer Discs with My LG GSA-4163B Burner

Hi,

Firstly hopefully I wrote this in the right thread. Anyways I have the LG GSA-4163B and for a long time I have been able to burn dual layer discs for a long time using Nero ver. 6.3. Though after I had to reformat my computer I haven't been able to burn dual-layer discs anymore. When I try with Nero 6.3 it says compilation can not fit on disc and I have even tried using Nero 8. When I tried with Nero 8 it said "reset occured", "Could not perform start of disc-at-once". As for my burner the firmware version is 102 and the newest one is 104 or 105 can't remember, but does anyone know how I could fix this problem and here is the burning log.

Welcome to the forums, netj9999. :flower:

What media do you use?

Can you try to make an image in Nero and burn it with ImgBurn, or do you get an error there, too?

Are these the same exact discs as you had before the reformat, or did you go out and buy some more after the reformat?

What is the MID of the discs? You can find out how to get the MID here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/580276-post3.html

Do you have any other burning programs or anything CD/DVD related installed on your computer besides Nero?

Oh sorry I forgot to say what they were. I use Memorex discs and have never really had a problem. What I burning is media files so I don’t burn images for them or anything like that I just use burn data dvd but here’s the MID info

Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R-DL:RITEK-S04-066]

Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R DL] - [DVD+R DL]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Media Type ID : [S04]
Product Revision : [066]
Blank Disc Capacity : [Not Supported By Method 2]
Recording Speeds : [2.4x , 3.3x-8x]
[Method 2 Might Not Always Detect All Speeds]

You can use ImgBurn’s BUILD capability to burn standard data files straight from your computer.

Also, you may just have run into a bad disc or two. RITEK S04 is the better of the Ritek DVD+R DL, but it’s still not all that good.

Plus, the discs are 8x DL, and your drive was produced back when only 2.4x media was made, IIRC. The firmware might only be using a default strategy.

Also, you might be able to try ImgBurn. If it errors out, upgrade the firmware [A105 should be latest]. If that doesn’t work, get better discs [if you get anything, go for Verbatim DL and try again]. If that still doesn’t work, try out a new drive.

Also, do you have any other CD/DVD related apps besides Nero?

You have to use Verbatim, is the short answer. The 4163 is an outstanding burner, but it can’t work miracles with bad media. I don’t think the 4163 ever had enough firmware development for the Ritek stuff, not that it would have helped much.

I’ll also second the suggestion to use something besides Nero for DL burning. Sounds like you’re just using DL discs for storing media files, which is a task better suited to single layer discs.

Ok thx I’ll try that

You can also use ImgBurn to check for the firmware update, Tools / Drive / Check for Firmware Updates. I think A106 was the one I had, before the drive died.

BTW, when I say use ImgBurn to burn, you can do everything in Nero, up to the point where you select the recorder. There you can select Image Recorder, save your compilation as an image on your hard drive, and burn that with ImgBurn. It takes a little extra time, but it works very well. :iagree:

Where can I dl the firmware update? What’s the link?

Even A106 does not support your RITEK-S04-066 disks.

I was searching the forums for some unrelated information on DL media and came across this thread. I can’t believe my little old guide from 4 years ago is still getting linked! It could probably use an update or two, but it’s nice to see that it is still used here and there.

I’ve the same problem wonder if anyone found the solution to this yet.

What is your problem?

This is an older thread and it involves specific issues (e.g. use of DL media not generally recommended or highly regarded - Memorex DL).

Maybe here.
