Problem Burning DL on Samsung SH-S203B Drive

Hello all,

I am having some major issues with this (relatively) new SATA drive.

First of all, here are the details:

[ul]
[li]Windows 2000 SP4[/li][li]Samsung SH-S203B (firmware SB03 - latest available)[/li][li]DVDFab Platinum 4.1.2.0[/li][li]Memorex DVD+R DL (have tried other media; behavior does not change at all)[/li][/ul]The drive will not burn Dual Layer media to save its life!

I continually get “Task_2 failed! Error=112”. This happens with all DL media. Fortunately, this one is not destroying the media…

Here is the log file:

5/7/2008 7:10:14 PM error Write cancelled, Your media is still usable.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive with no change in behavior.

I have tried deleting registry keys both in the hardware uninstall and the software (DVDFab) uninstall and reinstall procedures.

I have tried an older version of DVDFab as well.

I have NOT tried any changes to DVD Region+CSS Free.

Has anyone else had this issue and - by chance - found a solution!?! Any help is very much appreciated!

Thank you…

i had a sh-s203n and it would not burn ridata dvd+r dl 8x, or for that matter verbatim dvd+r 16x, would fail all the time, it would burn on verbatim dvd+r dl 8x, i just got mad and got a mad dog 20x md-20xstfi drive which also is supposed to burn at 16x to dvd+r dl, and it works better, but it will not burn to ridata dvd+r dl 8x either, i think because of the ota(opposite track alignment) constuction of the disk, the only burner that i can use to burn to these disks is the plextor 810sa, it works fine, but it is slower than the mad dog or the samsung, all the drives i have mentioned are sata.
hope you have better luck, thought i would throw in my experience with the samsung problem!!

Use the lowest available burn speed…in your case according to your log it’s 4X.

I couldn’t get my Sammy to burn Memorex dl either although I have had good luck w/ Verbatim and TDK dl,using the clone option seems to work best.I have an NEC/optiarc that will burn the memorex dl.

I have a samsung SH S203N and don’t seem to have this problem, BTW shouldn’t this be in the samsung drive section since it is a drive issue

#6

I’ll give it a try this week and see if that helps. It does seem that it will error out differently if that were the problem. However, I have noticed that DVDFab does not always have very good error reporting.

Thank you for the input! It certainly helps to have others’ experiences to guide selection of another drive. I just may end up doing that - buy the Plextor. I have had one previously, though it was before DL burners were available, and it worked very well.

#8

It still seems odd that each drive has its problems with various media…my latest laptop burner will not burn any DL - and I know that it is a drive issue as it will burn single layer, it will burn a DL every once in a while, and, when it fails to burn a DL, it burns one layer but errors out before switching to the second layer.

With this issue, I had hoped that it would be an issue with DVDFab as it did not seem to be able to set the layer change.

I have ordered some Verbatim DL discs to test with as well.

#9

So, you can burn Memorex DL discs without issue?

I did not know if this should go to the drive section or the software section as it is DVDFab that reports the failure and I searched the forum and found nothing that matched my problem with this Samsung drive.

After all, I am still using the older version of DVDFab on my laptop since I cannot get the latest builds to work at all.

I have burned a few Memorex DL disc’s still have a few left, don’t use them to much.
The only media that is now used in my rigs are Taiyo Yuden TYG02 and Verbatim for my DL disc.

I have a sammy 203B SB01 (SATA) and it is an outstanding drive. It’s very fast and consistently burns high quality bkups…SL and DL and to date, not one failure. According to owners posts on cdf, it does not do well with Memorex DL media or as they are referred to in the samsung subforum…memowrecks…:stuck_out_tongue:
Historically, these had often been Ritek D01…you might get a “ok” burn and often, you would get crap.

I’ve never used RITEK-S04-42, but apparently they do not do well in this burner…as least that’s the feedback from other members.

For DLs, I use MKM 003 (MIS) and burn at 8X…flawless bkups.
This seems to be my sweet spot with this burner, firmware and DL media.
I"d love to get some Verbatim MKM 001 (MIS), but I can’t find them any longer.
I have about 30 of them left, but I burn them in my Benq 1655 or Litey 20A1S. It kills me to use them, but both burners love 'em

For SLs, I typically use YUDEN T02 and Verbatim MCC 004.
Once in awhile, I’ll use TYG02 & 03.
None of these media ever present a problem in the 203B.

I hope this helps you.

Re: the verbatim DLs, be certain to get (MIS) made in singapore MID and not the (MII) made in India

I have just one complaint with this burner and that is that there is no firmware support for bitsetting. This is easily remedied, but takes an extra step…no big deal for sure.

Very nice information! And, alot of it, too! Would you be able to tell me where you purchase your MKM 003 (MIS) DL discs? If you know of a place to get a decent deal on those, please let me know.

I have not had many problems (maybe 1 bad burn out of 45) with Memorex DLs until I bought the Samsung drive (and my latest laptop drive). Just strange to me…

Thank you!

Hi quixotic_1,

AFAIK, Verbatim +R DL 8-10X (MKM 003) media, are only manufactured in singapore (MIS), so these have been safe to buy online.
I picked up 2 - 15 pk spindles at newegg with free shipping…as I recall about $1.40-1.50 each, not great, but about as good as you’re likely to find.
Officemax, micro center, Best Buy, Rima, supermediacenter, meritline, etc., should all be ok as long as they are verbs, +R DL 8-10X.

You should take a peek at the bargain basement subforum, good deals always show up there…

#16

I have an update on the MKM 003 media.
I looked at some recent reviews on newegg, etc. It seems MKM 003 are now being produced in India as well…Bummer…

So far, it looks like the orange label is still MIS, but I don’t know this for a fact. I’ve read where newegg was displaying the orange label, but shipping the blue/lavender label.
I guess the only way to be sure at this point in time, is to read the label on the spindle.

This is a huge disappoint for me and I’m sure many others…simply piss-poor business practice and shoddy manufacturing from Verbatim.

#17

Hi Maineman,

I was going to say…some of the Verb +R DL are definately MII. Last time I purchased from Office Max I had to look through whole bunch to find MIS. About a 50/50 mix. Packaging looks the same, so be carefull when shopping folks! :iagree:

Cool! Thank you for that list!

Well, that does make it seem easier - until I read your supplemental post…I guess I will now have to start paying much closer attention to what I buy. That’s sad as I had no issues until recently - at least none related to media brand and manufacturing location.

So, even NewEgg cannot be fully trusted? I suppose I will need to do loops through local stores now. I will also keep my eye open on the subforum.

Thank you!
