Princo (4x) are they really that bad?

Hi I’m not new to this forum, but I’m still newbish.
I just got me a LiteOn812s, I have had a Pioneer106 for some time.
I got the LiteOn because of the tools generally available and the forum knowledge and support.
I got a cakebox of Princo -R 4x. Then I read they are crap!
I’ve been backing up my kids’ movies on these discs about 6 months now, starting with my 106, but now concentrating my efforts with the 812s.
I modded it with 812@832 and am playing with the spdhack tool.
So I’m now burning my 4x princo’s at 8x, just to see what happens.
Nero says it burned at 3.8x to start(about 1/4), then showed 5.8x(maybe next 1/4), but showed 7.8x for the last half. When Nero was saying 3:28 minutes left to go, the burn finished. (Damn I forgot to time it manually)
So I did a KProbe. The scan was done at 4x.
This looks OK doesn’t it? (I did notice it says NO MEDIA, No disc)
but it was a Princo 4x burned at 8x
I did a scan of a disc I burned at 4x
http://forum.cdfreaks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4284
These look OK to me, why are most people critical of Princo?
Or, have Princo upped their quality.

Cheers

Not all Princo discs are plain crap. The problem with Princo is that you never know what the quality will be. Some Princo discs are ok while others (even on the same spindle) may be of very low quality. Often Princo discs are simply of medium quality and therefore many people here do not like them. I’ve used them myself too and some were good while others were simply the worst discs I’ve seen (read: unreadable after they were burned). The scans of the disc you’ve burned seem all right to me. Hope this helps!

I would like to see a “disc quality csan” done by Nero CD/DVD Speed 3 at 4X speed.
Can it be done?

Thanks

You can time it again using simulation.

Yes, many are critical, but not all  :

The problem is that Princo are perfectly happy to let their substandard media out the door, and they’re bought by shady distributors who are equally willing to sell them and mix them with decent stuff.

Proof of that is that whenever a new brand of Princo comes out it’s initially pretty good. Princo can make good (or at least reasonable) media when it suits them.

I downloaded cd-dvdspeed3.
I’m a bit unsure what you’re asking (“disc quality scan”?)
I’m unsure if U wanted the Burned DVD or a blank.
I used the burned DVD in the scan
I did the scan and I got some results.
Sorry for the format, didn’t know what I was doing

I Use The Speedhack 3.1.1 To Patch Princo /52 -R x8 In 812S.US0N.stock Bin
Then I Use LtnFW 2 Flash My SOHW-812S.

I Rebooted

I Use Sonic Sonic RecordNow DX, Version 4.61 To Record The ISO With SOHW-812S Set At 8x.

Here Is The Log:

I Did A CDspeed v3 Disc Quailty Check With Both DVD’s.

Its a acceptable burn should play ok. but another problem with princos is thier longectivity. they deterioate quickly so if your planning on using them for long term backup you may want to look at better media. I got a recent batch of 4x princos…some burned ok and others were coasters bout 50/50 mix…and that was even with my NEC 2500A which burns them the best. My advice if you can find other types of media. :iagree:

Jamos I Just Got Back From Dinner And I Thought I’ll Give It Another Go From A Different Spindle Of Princo’s.

Here How It Went:

All Went Well, Burnt In Around 9Min 50 Secs.
Did A KProbe2 Scan It’s The Worst I’ve Seen.
Put DVD In Another PC 2 Do A Transfer Speed Test With A NEC 2500a.
The NEC 2500a Wouldn’t Even See The DVD.
Put Back The DVD Into The PC With The 812S And It 2 Now Cannot See The DVD.
I Then Bin It.

I Will Not Personally Buy Princo’s.
But Friends Do Give Me Princo’s 2 Backup There Stuff.
I Choose 2 Burn Them At Only 2x.

Here One That I Burnt At 2x On The SOHW-812S

burning with the nec 2500a can make most cheap disks look good. if you live in the us and want some budget media id suggest cmc or prodisc thier quality is generally better. i get mine at www.accaproducts.com good service and fair prices.

these do really well in all my drives
http://www.accaproducts.com/prdv4pr4x0ea1.html and are .52 cents each 7 cents more than the equivilent princos so its worth it to get the prodiscs.

#13

We Need Online Shops Like That Down Under.
I Live In Australia And I Think Arthurking Does 2.

Alot Here In Australia Find Princo’s Being $30.00 (AUS) For 50 Too Hard 2 Pass Up.

#14

just remember if you burn ones for the bin that you must add that cost to your overall price.

#15

It Was A Small Sacrifice

#16

If you buy good quality media from start, no sacrifice needed…

Cheaper in the looong run.

lol.

Pulsee U R correct, I’m in Oz.
I think I stated before, I’d rather go for quality too.
If I hadn’t updated and modded the firmware of this 812s, I would have a bin full of Princo 4x DVD-R media.
As it turns out they burn excellent at 4x and good at 8x.
At least it’s not money down the drain.
I have just completed 2 burns for comparison.
1 done at 8x and other done at 4x. Same kids-show, only burn speed changed.
I also did a 4x burn in my 106 and so far it looks better. The Pioneer loves these princo’s!(burned in the pioneer, “disc quality tested” in the LiteOn).
But I’m half way through this box of princo’s and I gotta start looking for some ricoh,TY, MCC, etc…
One thing I noted Pulsee, your scans were better than mine but you scanned at 4x, I only get the option of 7X or 55X.???
And how did you get those scores of 68 and 72???
I didn’t see anything like that. (I too am using cdspeed3.00)

Thanks everyone for your input.
ps: I’ll have to post back in 6 months with my “kids durability” test of these princo’s

#19

You are right. CD/DVD Speed 3 is not showing right read-speed for “832”, quality test right now. Work to fix this is going on.

Quality score; look at the right side down corner HERE
