Pressed Media Speed Tests read @ 8x only. Why?

I recieved a disc from a friend of mine that contained a small flash demo on it. The disc is a hybrid Mac/PC disc, not a CDR but a pressed disc. Every drive that I put it in and run a speed test on it will only read at 8x. Is that a product of the hybrid disc or is it a setting in the leadin track that limits the read speed?

How fast a given drive reads given media is a function of the drive’s firmware, not the disc itself. Your drive probably sees it as a video disc and limits the speed to 8x. Every brand drive is different in this regard.

Alright, I’ll go with the video disc theory. But why is it that every drive I put it in reads at 8x? How could I reproduce this with a CDR? Is it something you add/remove in the leadin track?

All you can do is flash the drive with a modded firmware that unlocks the read speeds. These are available for some drives, not for others.

With CDR’s the picture is different. How, exactly are you determining that it is reading at “8x”? That sounds like a DVD, not a CD. It should say on the disc what it is, as licensing requires that.

The disc itself is a demo disc called “betty crocker fruit and nut.” It contains reciepes and whatnot in a flash type applilcation. It’s a CD, not a CDR. I used the Disc Info program that is part of the CD Bremse to get a few details out of the disc. I’ve also used Nero DriveSpeed and Plextools to do some analyse on the disc and every test comes back with the read speed of the disc being 8x.
