Power Calibration Error when burning with Nero

I have seen some similar but none the same, the log file follows…

Recently, Nero consistently fails on power calibration errors. I am running Windows XP, SP2 with all recent updates. Nero is 6.6.1.15. The DVD Burner was branded as MAD DOG but lists as VOX-12E48X.

DMA is on, Disk has been degragmented, memory is free and no applications are running.

I consistently, recently, get a power calibration on both TDK and Verbatim media.

The drive is set as master and is the only drive on that channel.

It is the only drive on that power ribbon/cable.

This is recent with no major upgrades.

Have clearned the Laser.

Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum

It seems a typical low quality disc issue. Try to burn a quality disc, this should solve.

I suggest Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden, the very best available at the moment in the market.

Cheapo discs and also this burner is an example form the less good ones…
What is the reason behind this:

Burn process failed at 1x (1,385 KB/s)

CdRomPeripheral : VOM-12E48X atapi

chef could you enlighten us? I haven’t seen this drive around very much…

It came out a while ago and cleaimed to be the first 12x dvd burner at that time.
Problem was/is, bad firmware support and really no well produced drive, IIRC.
Most media even were burnable at max 8x… So, ends up to be a marketing trick.

info: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters/artec-12x4x12-vom-12e48x/286

I agree with the comments on lack of support (although Mad Dog who rebranded it did offer me a deal on a replacement as it was out of warranty – once bitten, twice shy).

It fails on Verbatim as well as the TDK Media (the latter shows as CMC MAG, Media Type ID: M01, Product revision number: 0 which I thought was good based on the forms here).

For sure it won’t recognize anything > 12x media but I can’t find anything lower than 16! I could (painfully) live with 1x burning if it worked!

It also fails now with DVD FAB too – it used to work (slowly)…

I think it may be that the drive gave up the ghost.

Good deals at Tiger Direct on LG GSA-H55N (some bad reviews here), Line-on DH-20A4P-04 (OEM) and Philips SPD2413BM…all $31-$35. I don’t need litescribe so it’s comparision time!

Thanks for the help … any further insight much appreciated (and any comments on the proposed replacements also appreciated but I think that is likely a separate thread)

Your never going to get good writing performance using generic write strategy’s on unsupported media, even if it does sometimes work. You can get most drives made for about 30-40$ or less on newegg (or tiger direct if you like shopping there). I would just get a new one. The newer model liteons are good all around drives. There are plenty others to look at if you care to take the time to read the reviews here to find one that best suits your particular needs best (there is not one best drive, but several good ones with different strong points). You would be a lot better of, because like you said, its hard to find anything but 16x media anymore.

Decent & cheap dvd burners these days come from LG, Liteon, Optiarc, Pioneer, Samsung/TSST.

Thanks for all the input – ended up getting a Philips and have not had a problem since … looks like it was the drive itself.
