Power calibration error Liteon drive solved

vbimport

#1

This is the strangest thing. I have been having the power calibration error with a lite on ihap222 using CMC MAG, AM3 media (TDK dvd-r). Naturally, i jumped from post to post, tried everything, and nothing worked.
The problem is solved now, but it is the oddest thing on how it happened. I do not understand how it worked, so i post it here for those more knowledgable than me to puzzle out.
I will mention that I am on an intel platform, motherboard and chip, no onboard nvidia, though i am running a 256meg nvidia video card. My Sm2 chipset drivers are not nvidia, they are intel. So perhaps this will work for other intel users.

The solution:
I go to lite ons website, and click downloads. From "utilities" i dl:
1. BookType Bitsetting Utility for Optical Storage Products.
2. SMART-BURN Media Check Program for Optical Storage Products.

I run them both. The BookType Bitsetting utility does not seem to apply to me since i am running dvd-r CMC MAG, AM3 media, and this utility only applies to dvd+r media.
I run Smart-Burn and it tells me i should be able to record this media at 16x, but the utility does not appear to change anything.

Problem solved!!!???
My iHAP222 now burns the media with no problems. How did it happen using these two utilities? I haven't a clue.

All right, lets call the dogs out. I will post a before, and after nero log in the hope that it will tell the pros something they can use to help others.

sidenote The drive does burn CMC MAG, AM3 now, but it takes a while for it to engage in nero. I set burn speed for 16x now on a standard 4.7gig dvd-r disc and it takes almost 15 minutes to burn, which is obviously to long. But it burns error free, so i count my blessings and knock on wood. Its better than making coasters.

Here are the logs:

Well, that's it. I am very grateful for the help this forum "tried" to give me, so i post this hoping it will make it easier for the next victim of power calibration error. The only observation i can make on this is the problem was definatly the burner. I am still using the same media TDK dvd-r CMC MAG, AM3, so the "poor media" excuse does not seem to apply.

#2

Honestly, you have used kinda crappo media.
And that tis the source of all issues.

#3

Hiya Chef,

That’s what i thought too. But when I searched the forum for feedback on CMC MAG, AM3 I wasn’t so sure. Lots of people who tested it were impressed by the burning quality and low price. Generally speaking, the feedback I found on it here was good, to my surprise.
Unfortunatly, my local source for media is office depot, who carry TDK, Maxell, and Memorex. I could not find any of the “good media” listed here on there shelves, and since these three brands are all comparably priced i suspect they are all pretty much the same. To get anything good, i’ll probably have to buy my media online in the future.
What is spooky to me is that neither utilitie i dl from lite on’s website applied. I couldn’t use the bookmark setting utilitie since i was using dvd-r, so I didn’t apply any new setting with it. Same with smart burn, nothing to apply.
I suspect that simply by these utilities querieing the drive, they activated some setting on it, that made it work.
To my untrained eye, I couldn’t see much difference between the before fix, and after fix nero log files i posted.
Nevertheless, though the drive is burning now, it is still not right. Setting a 16x burn still takes about 15 minutes when it shouldn’t take more than 6 minutes on 4.7 blanks.
This drive is bought new only two months ago, and I will never own another lite on. Everyone seems to have trouble with them as far as media, that works fine for everyone else, and frankly i am sick of dealing with it. You can’t polish a turd, and i have learned my lesson. My next burner will surely be a plexor, and I will leave all these problems behind.

Hi,QUOTE=Dominateus;2282958Nevertheless, though the drive is burning now, it is still not right. Setting a 16x burn still takes about 15 minutes when it shouldn’t take more than 6 minutes on 4.7 blanks.[/quote]I guess, the drive is slowing down due to the media quality. Could you please run Nero CD/DVD Speed (or Disc Speed, whichever is installed) and burn a disc with the “create disc” tab. Post the screenshot here, please. You might also try a “Disc Quality” test (set read speed to 4x here) and post also.

My next burner will surely be a plexor, and I will leave all these problems behind.
Recent Plextor drives are recycled Liteons

Hiya Michael,

Recent Plextor drives are recycled Liteons

sigh the fun with this drive knows no bounds. O.K., I’ll do my bit. Let me check out nero to get what you need. I’ll post up when i find what you want.

Would someone please definatly declare CMC MAG, AM3 as good media, or bad? Trying to run this down in the forum has left me with the wrong impression i suspect. From what I read, even those who were ready to declare it as a threat to navigation before testing, were nevertheless impressed by it after the burn tests. Good or bad? Someone please, pin either a medal, or a bullseye on it for me.

Also, before i post back up, I’m going to check some of my other software, which i dl and installed over the course of trying to solve this, to make sure they haven’t initiated a system setting that has slowed the drive down.

Imgburn immeadiatly comes to mind, since it allows read and write options on not only the media but the burner, and i set them both to the test specs results I found here. Off the top of my head i remember setting the drives burn speed to 8x, though i don’t see how this would effect nero.

#6

Check here for scans: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f76/cmc-dvd-r-78606/index7.html

They can be good, depending on the real manufacturer, brand and used burner.

#7

Well,

I just ran the disc quality check in nero. Not sure how to read this…but I think the short of it is that this TDK dvd-r CMC MAG, AM3 is not good media for this burner. Which sucks cause I have a spindle of 90 blanks that apparently i can’t use.
I have some dvd dual layer blanks, and some cd blanks that the drive has no problems with. They burn and read normally.
Anything i try to burn with CMC MAG, AM3 burns, but then when I eject and reload to check the burn, the drive lights up…then reads for about 5 minutes before giving me the option of how i want to open it.
For this drive at least, CMC MAG, AM3 does not appear to be good media.
Anyway, check it out. Any suggestions as to what I can do, would be appreciated

#8

Try burning at 8x or 12x, not 16x!

#9

Hiya Chef,

Yeah, I’m doing that. Burn speed is 8x, but it don’t matter. This drive just doesen’t like this media.

That’s o.k… Like i said earlier, It eats up my other media, reads and burns my dual layer dvd, and cd blanks with no problems. To the good - I’ve learned a lot about media and have a much better understanding of nero than I had when I started. So I’ll experiment with other media until i find one it likes.
I am curious about all the red spikes at the end of the disc quality check, and wondering if they are significant, but aside from that, I’m pretty much satisified its the media, not the burner.

For your efforts mciahel on my part, Thankx. You were an education.

And chef, Since you showed up I have suspected we have crossed paths in other places. Thankx for looking out for me.

Update,

Allrighty thennnn…I did it. I lived - to burn another day. Over the course of this truely beguiling incident I have done the following to eliminate power calibration error.

  1. Updated the firmware.
  2. Changed my power cables around.
  3. Changed my region
  4. Turned off the Imapi burn service
  5. Unclicked burn c.d. on this burner
  6. Updated my chipset
  7. Updated my bios
  8. Considered suicide
  9. Tried the data cable doubleboot switcharoo to force calibration/reset
  10. Cleaned the lens with 70% alcohol solution
  11. Tried both master and cable select jumper switches
  12. Attempted suicide
  13. Dl other software imgburn, burnferfree, etc
  14. Tried codekings modded cd-dvd speed
  15. Repeated burn attempts 4x-16x throughout the process
  16. Read zillions of posts, including replies
  17. Run zillions of tests to find out WHYWHYWHY???
  18. Give up, and change media.

Now, I know your familiar with my burners disdain for TDK DVD-R Single layer 16x CMC MAG, AM3 media, So imagine my horror when i got home with my new 100 spindle of Maxell DVD-R Single Layer 16x discs, loaded one up and the system tells me I am the proud owner of more CMC MAG, AM3 media.
As the condemmed man approaches the gallows, i open nero, and fatalisticly start the burn. Life suks, i am thinking as i watch the pretty blinking lights.

BUT IT WORKED!!! Not the slickest thing you’ve ever seen, but I’ve burned 10 discs now at 8x, no problemo’s.

So chase ye hardware as ye may, and change your plugs and settings all day… If ya got a good burner and ya know it…Like chef said about media: “it can be good depending on real manufacturer, brand and used burner”.

My burner loathes TDK DVD-R Single layer 16x CMC MAG, AM3 media,
But it loves Maxell DVD-R Single layer 16x CMC MAG, AM3 media. The only difference i can see is that the TDK was silver color, and the Maxell is gold color. But their both CMC MAG, AM3, and both about the same price in the store.

Go figure.

To the extra good the data cable doubleboot switcharoo raised my Emprex 16x from the dead, and I’ve put it back in my system.

You can pick up some handy tricks while your running around this place losing your mind.
