PMA Update Failure

I have tried just about everything that I’ve read and I am still no closer to finding an answer as to why I can’t burn DVDs anymore. I have tried Nero, Dvd Shrink, and ConvertX and get the same message at the very end. From what I read before, it had a lot to do with bad media. I had Verbatims, but it was the last few of the stack so I thought maybe they were bad. I just opened a new stack today, same thing. I am able to burn CDs with the burner still. Oh here’s the log, if that helps,

Those errors typically indicate a hardware issue. My first thought, especially since you have already tried numerous burning apps, is a failed burner.

#3

Does this happen with all your DVD burns or just this specific title?

#4

It’s happening no matter what I try to burn, be it a compilation of my own video files or a backup of a DVD.

#5

As PMA issues seems to be only related to +R media, switching to -R media ought to solve your issue.

#6

Transcoding has nothing to do with burning.

But the real problem is:

#7

@KittyBass,

Are you working whit vista x64 sp1 too by chance ?

This issue of yours look identicall to wot i have experienced…
Iam scratching my head over this aswell , but i have found a work arround (not realy an sollution but… close)

Iam sure , its not your media and or burner which is causing this !!

I myself have tried 2 different burners using 3 different brands dvd+r, and still the message pops up at the end of the write process after lead out just like you have right now…

I know in my case the drive nor media is faulty because it happends occassionally whit 1 movie between 3500 - 4000 mb in size !!!

Ive noticed movies from that size gives me problems lately !! Wot REALY is strange it never happends whit movies bigger than 4Gb !!!

Also, if you test that movie in question in stand alone … youll notice it wont start to play because of that leadout pma failure !!

However, burning that same problematic movie throug imgburn gives me the pma update warning aswell… But imgburn keeps trying to rectify that errror (in my case) and it does fix my burn quite good i must say… Despite of that pma failure i get even through imgburn, iam still able to play that disc in a stand alone whereas whit a nero8 or nero9 burned disk it doesnt play at all… So this is realy realy strange to say the least …!

Now, as for the workarround… I woud just re-edited the specific movie which gives those pma errors either through an re-author program or pgcedit or remake!!! For some strange reason, that problematic movie i re-edit/re-author burns whitout any errors/problems ??? Dont ask me why but it just does burn perfectly??? I just want to point out , it looks (from my experience) it has something to do whit the : size, content, … from that movie you wish to burn!!? Again, dont ask me why …; iam just as baffled aswell about this issue!?

edit: Just want you to know this!! I suggest you recompile that movie because, if you burn that movie and ignore that error your only chance to watch that movie is from your pc … And its not garanteed to work on stand alones (again my personal experience)!!!

Hi cynthia,

Now when i come to think of it… It coud be verry well a OS related problem !!

On my vista x64 system it looks like size matters when burning video data!!
But out of curiousity i have moved , the burner + sata pci card to my other xp pro system and installed every neccesarry driver up to date… And guess wot, havent had any problems burning the same problematic title whit the same size (in short the unaltered title)???

Ill install xp pro x86 and make an duall boot of my new vista x64 rigg, just to be sure and find out if its finaly hardware or software related realy !!

#10

Good grief!!!

Have made dual boot from vista rigg… And having the same pma issue on 2 sata samsung burners noless !!! Using my pata liteon burner doesnt give pma error !!!

wots bugging me is, that this is the FIRST TIME in years of burning all different kind of content i have had an pma failure !!? Iam using both samsung drives almost every day which are both almost a half year NEW!! I never have had such an errors untill i moved those drives to my new assembled rigg ermm!!? Though my Mobo’s bios up-to-date , drivers all up to date …!! Weird weird weird…!

The only thing to me which can be helped is either , resizing the content of data , that or hoping for another firmwfare for these drives !!! Or considering another mobo, as those drives work just perfect burning that same content using my other system!! I higly doubt its media related, as it ocurs whit all 3 different brands of which one is Verbatim +r !!

Wot an misterious problem to say the least !!!
