I recently bought a barebones system (Asus Pundit P2-AE2) which came with an Asus scb-2408 combo drive pre-installed. The first time I tried playing a DVD the drive froze and I assumed it was because there was a small scratch on the disk. This didn’t seem to be a problem when I played the movie in other dvd drives. I subsequently used the drive without problems for a few times but it has recently developed the following issue: whenever I insert a DVD movie, the drive spins up and then down again repreatedly, and the DVD playback application (PowerDVD 5, Windows Media Player 9, vlc-0.8.5) freezes as does the whole system. The drive has no problems reading and writing to cds, and I’m able to boot from it. Is there anything I can do to get my drive back to full working order or at least establish what the fault is?
I’m running WinXP SP2 and have the latest firmware driver for the drive. The drive is a slimline one.
