Plextor still makes a CD-only writer, the “Premium II”:
It’s very good but also rather expensive and only available with IDE interface. A closer look can be found here:
It can be bought via regular ways in Europe. In the US you may have to contact Plextor directly.
As for Combo/DVDRW drives Plextor does not anymore design their own drives but they label drives by other makers. The last drives that were of original Plextor design (and that may rival the quality and features of their CD writers) were: PX-712, 716, 755 and 760.
There are IDE-to-SATA and SATA-to-IDE adapters available. I’ve not tried the Premium II with one, but i’m currently using a LG GGW-H20N BluRay drive (SATA) on an IDE port with no problems.
Thank you for the tip on the adapters. I’m completely new to Sata. In fact the reason I bought a prefab box rather then upgrading my win 98 box is I was told by the local shop’s tech that modern mother boards are no longer supporting ide & I’d have to toss the 4 burners & hard drive in the 98 box. I likely would have made a different choice if I’d known of the adapters…
