Plextor PX-W4824A fw1.03 'AWS' results

I did some tests with the freshly released 1.03 firmware for the Plextor PX-W4824A drive. This latest version seems to work with CloneCD’s ‘AWS’ feature! I backed-up Mafia (SafeDisc v2.70.030) and tested the back-up in a Toshiba SD-M1502 DVD-ROM and it played!. The only problem is that I used an unofficial CloneCD version so I can’t say for 100% that the firmware fixed it:

Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS disabled: back-up failed (as expected)
Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS enabled: back-up worked!
Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS simulation: back-up worked!

Please note that this topic is not about which SafeDisc version the Plextor can copy. The problem with older firmwares for the Plextor PX-W4824A drive was that it couldn’t create a perfect back-up of SD2.51+ even with CloneCD’s AWS enabled. This problem seems to have been fixed now.

Anyone who can confirm my results with the latest Plextor drive and firmware 1.03 using an official CloneCD version? The back-up must be tested in a Toshiba drive since that’s a very picky drive for SafeDisc back-ups… Thanks!

Well, I can’t confirm that, 'cause I haven’t such burner, but I can confirm that I 've copied Mafia (I think that italian version use the same protection) with my Plexwriter 8/20 with an older version of CloneCD and it works fine.
Maybe that safedisk 2.70 is not so hard as 2.80 is!

No the problem was that the Plextor PX-W4824A didn’t work with CloneCD’s ‘AWS’ feature. It failed to back-up SD2.51.021 and up eventhough its younger brothers (PX-W4012A, PX320A, etc) could do it without problems. That’s what seems to have been fixed. I’m doing more tests now…

I know that SD2.80 is harder to copy. That’s not what I was testing

More tests: I downgraded my CloneCD version to the latest official version, 4.1.0.1. The Plextor PX-W4824A drive could normally not create a fully working back-up of GTA3 (SD2.51.021) even with CloneCD’s ‘Amplify Weak Sectors’ enabled. Here are my results again, tested in the Toshiba (which previously refused to play the back-up):

-AWS disabled: back-up failed (as expected)
-AWS enabled: back-up worked (unexpected!)

So I think we can conlude that firmware 1.03 fixed the ‘AWS problem’ we saw with previous firmware versions

Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS disabled: back-up failed (as expected)
Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS enabled: back-up worked!
Toshiba SD-M1502, AWS simulation: back-up worked!

I’ve never used CCD before, what’s the difference between AWS enabled and AWS Simulation?

Plextor fixed the problem also for my2410a (sine it seems to be possible) , I would be very happy.

Well I can’t say for sure since the CloneCD version is still beta and hasn’t been released yet… Sorry!

I think the Plextor PX-W2410TA drive could already do SafeDisc 2.51~2.70 with AWS enabled (although there were some rare exceptions that it didn’t work). The problem that AWS didn’t work was only with the PX-W4824TA drive but this has been fixed now.

“Fixed” is IMHO pretty exaggerated. “Fixed” would mean write it without AWS

… I tried everything ( clone 3, clone 4) but my backup with Aws didn’t work on the Toshiba and Pioneer and who knows on other readers. Is there anyone which can confirm that the copy made with this device works on the Toshiba?
Thanks.

G@M3FR3@K, any idea of a release date for the new version of clonecd?

TIA;
S

Oh well, maybe a new firmware will do that, who knows ?
BTW, are there any drives that can do what you said, copy SafeDisk 2.51-2.8x w/o AWS enabled ?

Yep. Mostly LiteOn writers and some other drives.

I had the same problem with my 2410a, it would just make coaster after coaster or game would play in my other drives and not in it. I have always been skeptical of Plextor firmware updates as in past they have screwed up burning, Remember the plextor firmware size difference problems about a year ago. But after reading this post I flashed my 2410a and 482448 each with their own 1.03 update and problem solved on both drives. I can copy with Clone cd 4.1.0.1 SD 2.51-2.8 I copied Mafia and Iron Storm(SD 2.8 US Version) In both burnes as test .

Each Backup from each burner plays in all my CD Roms and Burners and DVD Drives. Plextor 40x SCSI, Toshiba SCSI M1401 DVD, Pioneer DVD Rom, Liteon 48125S, Yamaha 8168 SCSI, Toshiba M1612 DVD.

With AWS enabled. But I do not have to Hide CDR, this is disabled. I never could leave this off before.

I also can now burn Securom new with these drive as well. With Clone cd and Blindwrite.

What is the highest version of SD2 that the Plextor 48X can copy?

SD 2.80.010(The Sims Unleashed)(fw v1.04),havent tried any SD 2.9.xxx yet though./gs

Did you get it (2.8) or you just tried?

Anyone tried higher?

Did you get it (2.8) or you just tried?

What exactly do you mean? I have backed-up a game cd with Safedisc v.2.80.010(The Sims Unleashed),and I haven´t tried any "higher"SD ver. since I don´t own anyone yet

havent tried any SD 2.9.xxx yet though
/gs

Oh. Ok. Update us for any changes?
