Plextor PX-708UF - one good burn, many frisbees

I just bought Plextor 708UF (USB2.0).

So far I have been able to burn one CD at whooping 8x. Before that I had ten frisbees.

I also tried DVD ands so far no good, four frisbees.

The problem is a bit different every time but the most common is that after a while (10%-70% recorded) the flash light goes into steady orange, the user buffer stays at 100% and the buffer is emptied. When it hangs until I shut down the recorder.

I did read the FAQ, so both IDE/TA are in Ultra DMA mode, ASPI is 4.71 and I updated VIA 4 in 1 drivers to the latest (4.49).

The system is a AMD Athlon XP 1700+ on a VIA K7T266 Pro2 motherboard.

There’s two SCSI interfaces, both Adaptec AHA-2940U/AHA-2940UW. To the first I have two system SCSI disks
and to the other a Plexwriter 8220.

A third harddisk ATA/66 is connected via the builtin VIA IDE/ATA.

I have lately added a Belkin USB 2.0 2-port PCI and one port is connected to a Belkin USB 2.0 4-port hub.
The PX-708 is connected to the other port.

I have one Maxtor harddisk connected via the hub.

I have tried both with Nero 5.5.10.40 (taht came with the Plextor) and the latest (6.0.019).
The firmware is of course 1.03.

I tried Plextor support, the response was upgrade firmware (done, didn’t help) and downgrade software (done, didn’t help).

I tried burn the same files with my old plexwriter 8220 and it worked perfectly as always at 8x. With the PX-708 I had one good at 8x and many failures, even at 4x.

Anyone that has the slightest problem what could be wrong or what I could try ? Since the burning starts 8and actually finsished once) I assume the device is working correctly.

Logfile: from burning a CDR at 16x

There is some kind of driver conflict I think which prevent UDMA from working properly. I make from your post that the PX-708A drive is connected via USB 2.0 so it’s an external model or not? If so then UDMA is not an issue. I see you’re using ASPI v4.71. Please read this thread on ASPI and which layer you should install. Have you tried uninstalling the VIA drivers and going back to the default Windows drivers? Please report back.

Yes it is the external UF model and I have it connected via a USB2.0 PCI.

I tried playing a DVD on it and it worked until I tried fast forward, then it hung just like during recording.

I tried disconnecting other USB devices but it did not help.

Finally I tried something desperate, I connected the recorder to the VIA motherboard built-in USB 1.1 port and suddenly I could burn a DVD. Of course it took 1hr 20min but still! And it worked in my DVD player as well. So there’s seems to be nothing wrong except that I cannot burn at a acceptable speed.

So at the moment I can conclude it is something that clashes between the PX-708 and the USB2.0 PCI (a Belkin). I have several other devices that I connect to USB2.0 and I have had no problem moving data between them. So PX-708 is the only device that has a problem.
I have the latest USB drivers and Windows 2000 SP4 so that should not be an issue.

I had a look at the BIOS and enabled USB legacy (still everything except the Plextor worked just fine before) but that didn’t help either. Also switched off power management since I found at usbman.com that this could also cause problems but the burning still won’t go through.

I attach the pxinfo printout, someone who knows configurations might be able to point something out.

The Maxtor HD is also connected to the USB2.0 via the USB hub but it does not show up in the printout for some reason.

Problem description

Well I think it’s safe to conclude your problem is related to the USB 2.0 interface card. For some reason the Plextor drive and the card don’t like eachother. Have you tried installing new drivers for your USB 2.0 card? Also, have you checked out the thread on ASPI? Could be worth checking out and trying some different ASPI versions. One thing that you can also try is to take out the PX-708A drive from its USB casing and then use it as an internal drive to see if it works properly. Please note though that I don’t know if opening the USB casing will void your warranty!! Only do this at your own risk. Another thing that you can try is to attach the drive to another USB 2.0 card to see if that works. Maybe you can take your drive to a friend’s house or computer shop and check… I know this is a lot of work but it’s very hard to say what’s causing the problem. Please report back!

Thanks to the excellent support from Plextor I think the problem finally is solved. At least I have tonight burned a DVD+R at 8x successfully.
I also now have five consecutive successes with DVD and CD media.

The problem was a mixture of having wrong drivers and for some reason a misconfiguration.

The USB 2.0 PCI used the generic W2K drivers and that actually worked fine for all other devices I had.
The PX-708UF was faulty identified as a SCSI device.

There is a specific driver for the Belkin PCI card but installing that did not help the misconfiguration. This could be seen in the PXinfo printout.

So I had to do the following:

  1. Uninstall all USB drivers (Device Manager - USB Controllers). Probably unnecessary to uninstall all but I thought it was safer.
  2. Reboot and let Windows install the generic drivers again. Now the PX-708 was identified as USB connected device.
  3. Install the Belkin driver.

Great, good to hear that! Thanks for reporting back!
