Plextor PX-708A vs Memorex Dual-X - Write quality

First: take the reults with a grin of salt, but may still be worth a look.
Second: The amont of PI and PO errors reported varies from drive type to drive type so these results can only be compared to other results obtained with a Lite-On LTC-48161H.

The memorex Dual-X is actually a pioneer DVR-106 with firmware 1.05.

And finally Verbatim DataLifeplus 4X DVD+R. Reorder no: 43211, sold in 5 packs with jewel cases, says Made in Japan and is manufactured by Taiyo Yuden. No tests with the memorex and no test at 4X since these discs costs $$$$$$$$ (about 3 times as much as princo and datawrite).

Disc written at 8X with plextor:

I won’t comment the results more right now as the scans shows my findings…

#2

Those results, being burned in both burners, are rather high. On my PX-708A, my PI average is generally between 2 and 4, and my PO average is generally between .5 and .7

This may sound like a stupid suggestion, but I would recomend scanning at 8x, instead of Max, and defragging your Hard Drive.

#3

Verbatim DLP +R should not be made by Taiyo Yuden, but Mitsubishi. Are you sure that those discs are no fake?

#4

The verbatim discs seems genuine to me.

aviationwiz: Do you read your discs at maximum speed? and remember that Lite-On DVD-roms gives different results than this combo drive!

#5

I’d say these look a LOT better. I wonder if it could be the difference between a combo drive and a reader. Who knows.

#6

aviationwiz: umm. I scanned the discs in my LTD-163D GHR8 as well, but they are far from as good as your results.

(PI about 35.x and po about 0.7 for arita DVD+r 4X written at 4X)

My LTD-166S will arrive next week and I’ll rescan the discs then.

#7

I have some more disks that I will scan at Max speed, but your results seem awfully high. Are you burning from files on your Hard Drive? If so, is your hard drive fragmented a lot, that might have something to do with it.

#8

Verbatim DLP recordables can be made by TY these days.

Since MCC allready started setting up the few production lines they have themselves and some of the extra lines for 8x media and 4x DVD+RW/DVD-RW media.

For this reason MCC has decided that there Verbatim brand will use also disc’s made by different manufacturers.
Following manufacturers are possible:
TY,ricoh,CMC.

Same thing has been seen with 2x dvd-r/ 2,4x dvd+r media. When MCC focussed on 4x media. CMC and Ricoh got themselves a deal for some media.

#9

Well, for me these kind of results worry me no end rather than shrugged off with a pinch of salt

In many of these damn Lite-on (sh*t on?) tests, only because these drives offer such P0/P1 tests, quite often the more expensive and supposdely much better quality media gives more errors than cheaper stuff. I find this hard to believe. Although, the plextor (NEC?) drive seems to not be a jewel in Plextors crown - maybe Plextor / TY have lost their quality and crowns.

TY (That’s) and Verbatum and some good Ritek are supposed to be good - if they show more errors than media costing half as much, well, pissed is not the term - I wish we could have a more reliable and trustworthy test scenario. This is not knocking the efforts of those providing tests, just I want to rely on good media, and right now, TY / Verbatum / Ritek dont seem to shine judging by all reads in Lite-on drives - hmmm.
