Plextor Premium 2, just bought - but what did I actually buy?

Been reading these forums, about that Premium2, but most recent relevant posts seem to be a year old or so…

Wondering what exactly this burner I accidentally got is - the ‘real’ thing, or something entirely different.
(ordered this ‘by order only’ item, just to see what would happen, and surprise surprise, something came…)

The box and unit both says Premium 2, with ‘T3K’ on the (plain brown) box sticker.

What puzzles me is the manufacturing date, june 2008(eight)…
“Made in Japan” it also says. And there’s a long serial number, which gives me nothing on google.
Though the CD has copyright from 2006…

Haven’t unpacked or installed it yet, is meant for storage/spare part.

 • So, do they STILL make these, or is this some 3rd party oem stuff inside ?

Any clues would be welcome.

Welcome:
You have the best CD burner in the world, some members have reported that their drives were MIJ. It is a real Plextor AFAIK enjoy!

Thanks for reply!

Though given all the other info around here, I’m still wondering about that manufacturing date…
They(Plextor themselves) actually make these even as of summer 2008 ?

One could easily believe that say Lite-On actually makes the hardware, slapping on a Plextor logo or something (?)

Oh well, I’d better test it then, just in case.

Forgot to mention, the TLA is 0303, which judging from the eminent faq here, means it’s firmware 03, and hardware revision 03 as well…

PS: …and if it was TLA 0103 in December 2007, as pictured in this link below, they certainly had some crunch time this spring, upgrading the hardware to revision 02 and later 03, all of a sudden…
(with beeing 01 for so long, and all)

Me suspicious much… :cop:

Don’t think there is a reason for suspicion. Where’d your order it from?
Where’d your order it from?
…And how much did it cost?

#7

Well, local computer chain store (Datakjeden), on ‘special order’(nothing in stock), guessing that their supplier had to call the ‘big’ supplier, who again had to… etc etc…

Took its’ sweet time, though…

And cost, hmm… do we dare…?

Umm, ok, not sure with all these exchange rates jumping up and down lately, but… using rates from September 1st as basis, I got a small shock to the tune of $185 (‘old’ dollars).
But arguing that the exchange rates had gone crazy since my initial order, I got it down to $148(‘old’ rate). Still way out there - by personal opinion…

The box states ‘www.plextor-europe.com’, if of any significance.

 • I don’t have any reason to believe it’s fake or anything, just that its’ inner workings may happen to be (in a legal way) made by some other company than Plextor.

That price is about right for a brand new Plextor Premium II. They are very expensive.

I think Plextor have always maintained limited manufacturing capacity in Japan for their more specialised items. It looks like they’re continuing to make small batches of the Premium 2 for Europe.

Cheers
