Plextor DVD+/-RW won't read CD's or DVD's

In my Windows XP Professional SP1a system, the Plextor PX-708A (Serial # 505884369612) will not read any CD’s or DVD’s. Each time I try, Windows crashes with a blue screen!

This was before and after I just (apparently successfully) flashed the latest firmware, ver. 1.06. Previously I had been using 1.04 and still it would not read CD’s or DVD’s. I’m pretty sure the drive could read both CD’s and DVD’s at some point earlier, so I suspect a software problem.

Windows Device Manager lists this device as “PLEXTOR DVDR PX-708A SCSI CdRom Device”. The “SCSI” there sounds suspicious to me! (Or does the drive, in fact, use an ASPI layer?)

I have also from time to time had Windows error messages that DLA could not load (even though I didn’t have any disk in either the PX-708A or my other Plextor drive, Plexwrite Premium.

Below is all the diagnostic information reported by PlexTools Professional V2.11. The drive in question is indicated by my marking with *** below.

Note that I have this drive connected via an Abit “Serillel” IDE-to-SATA connector to an on-board SATA channel. I’d suspect this hardware aspect except that, as I said, the drive had earlier been able to read CD’s and DVD’s, and that the drive seems to be found and its firmware could be flashed.

Take a look here, as this might be of help…

I moved the thread to the Plextor forum btw, seems to be a better place for it

My problem with the Plextor PX-708A DVD+/-R/RW drive causing Windows XP to crash each time I tried to read a CD or DVD has been fixed, thanks to Plextor tech support. (They replied today, Sunday, to an e-mail support request within 90 minutes!)

They asked whether I had Sonic DLA installed and, if so, to uninstall it. I actually had Stomp DLA installed, which I understand is essentially the same thing (which also has some connection with Veritas). So I uninstalled Stomp DLA, and now my drive works just fine.

They replied to a follow-up of mine that DLA was obsolescent and incompatible with the Plextor drive, and that what I really wanted was UDF.

I guess it may be time to give up, too, on Stomp’s RecordNow MAX, which came with the Stomp DLA. I’ll start with the Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 that came with the Plextor drive. (Any comments about that are welcome.)

I would recommend using NERO burn instead of ROXIO. I’ve read where some have problems burning with ROXIO with the Plextor 708A. Just my opinion.
