Plextor 708a & DVD-R @ 8x

I was wondering if the plextor 708a can write dvd-r at 8x? The firmware 1.06 says:

“Added support for new DVD-R media and the functionality to write at 2x and 4x on 8x media from Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Verbatim, and TDK”

Does that mean they added functionality to write 8x on those media with just the +r? Or are those for -r? They really should have seperated those into 2 seperate points…

The Key word in that sentence is “on
as it says to write at 2X and 4X

Added support for new DVD-R media and the functionality to write at 2x and 4x on 8x

oh, i get it now, i guess i was reading it too fast. Thx for the reply.

That’s it, but you have here a good point LexCorp.
Some manufacturers did allow their drives to do 8x with -R, improving from 4x via firmware (Sony seems to have done it).
By the time 708A came out 4x was the media max. speed, opposite to +R that could be written at 8x on 4x media, but 8x was already approved.
Plextor said they would not increase 708A speed to 8x -R, but who knows if they changed their minds by now?
e.mailing them could give us a clue.

after giving us bitsetting for 708A…
maybe now we could start asking them for 8x DVD-R support if ever its possible so we could get the most out of our drives…
