Plextor 708 UF problems - frustrated!

vbimport

#1

I am using the 8 speed PX 708 UF
It can burn CDs but not much to DVD
I'm getting frustrated.

I am on XP Pro, now with firmware 1.04 and Nero 5.5.10.54
IBM thinkpad T30

I first tried CD burning and that worked fine.
I then tried DVD+RW to Packard Bell DVD
The first DVD got to 99% then gave me
"plextor could not perform end of Disc-at-once"

I upgraded the firmware to 1.04
which fixed this problem, but every DVD after that started to fail midway at around 30%.

I got a Buffer Overrun once
Another time and thereafter I just got a write error.

So I upgraded my Nero to 5.5.10.54
I still get the same problems.

I can write a very small DVD with a few Meg of data, but anything significant fails.

I've attached the log file below.

Can anyone help fix this

many thanks
Tim

Some questions:
Is this a USB 2.0 port?

Looks like you have not updated your aspi layer. You have Wnaspi32 v1.0 (windows?) and wnaspi32 Ahead in the program files. Have you tried an updated aspi from Nero or Adaptec? The file should be in the \windows\system32 directory

The log indicates Optodisc? The error code indicates a medium error. Try with Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Ricoh media

Have you run self test on the drive?

Some suggestions
Update Nero
Update ASPI
Use recommended media
Use Nero CD/DVD test and do a ‘Create Data disc’ to graph the response

#3

Its a USB 1 which I intend to upgrade, but I thought slow didn’t mean not working at all.

No I haven’t updated ASPI
No I haven’t tried self test.

Thanks I’ll go and get some new disks and try your suggestions.

#4

OK - tried that and no better
I used a Sony +RW disc instead (compatible).
Updated the ASPI
Latest Nero and Firmware

No joy

#5

I think that nero 6.3.0.2 and aspi from nero will do the trick.I used adaptec’s aspi but i think that has many issues which must be solved. If you want to finish your coaster you can use batchdisk. It is a dos program that finalizes your cd/dvd which remain open.Search more threads about it if you like,

#6

I was shipped Nero 5
How do I get to Nero 6 - the upgrade download is demo only and does not take my Nero 5 key

#7

I still have no result. Looks like this drive’s going back unless anyone has other ideas

#8

I think yer problem is the USB port not being 2.0 , I suggest getting a USB 2.0 card & try again. As you said, your gonna get a usb 2.0 anyways so try that before you return the drive. It’s just a educated guess. Good luck & let us know if it works, also are you burning movies??? Also I have heard of problems with Nero not closing disks & you have to use a different program to close the disk.

#9

There were indeed some problems with Nero and the Plextor PX-708A not closing discs but these problems have been solved in the latest Nero version (6.3.0.2). You also have to install the latest firmware 1.04 for the Plextor drive.

tim1965 I see you are burning a multisession disc. Have you tried burning a normal/closed disc? And of course the Plextor PX-708A needs USB 2.0. USB 1.1 is not recommeded as it will limit the drive’s performance a lot.

#10

If you want a non bloated copy of Nero you can revert back to 5.5.10.42.
ftp://ftp.freenet.de/pub/filepilot/windows/cd-brenner/nero551042.exe
Even though Aheads stats that PX-708* is supported in 5.5.10.49b it works perfectly fine in 5.5.10.42, at least on my comp.
btw, USB 1.1 only handles 1500 kB/s at max which means that you’ll barely be able to burn at 1X (1x DVD = 1353 kB/s) without having “Buffer Underrun Proof Technology” kickin’ in.

Thanks folks for all the help - this forum is excellent. It’s nice to find a group of likeminded supportive people on the web.

I’m getting USB2 (ordered) and will try this, with the right versions of firmware and nero.

Plextor have sent me an RMA no. but I’ll keep that up my sleeve until I’ve tried USB2
