Please recommend me the best discs for my needs

Hi,

I've been reading around and searching the forums for the past week but still can't find a definitive answer really...

I have an LG GSA-H54L flashed to H55L (1.05) and a GSA-E10N (JE07). But I usually only burn single layers in the H54L (H55L).

I can't afford genuine unbranded Taiyo Yudens so they're out of the question.

I need a good, non degrading disc, that will last many years but I will be using the discs (videos) quite often to play.

I have wittled down my choices to

Verbatim DVD-R 100pk 16x Non-Print (MCC03RG20 guaranteed I think (100pk))

or

Verbatim DVD+R 100pk 16x Non-Print (MCC004 guaranteed?? )

or

Verbatim DVD+R 25pk 16x Non-Print (MCC004 or Yuden T03 I think?? )

Reason is I have about 500 discs on RitekG05 and some are started to die now so time to back them up to decent discs.. (I didn't know about this great forum when I first started buying G05's)

ps: I live in UK and was planning to buy from Scan.co.uk (free delivery)

Since you live in the UK , you have Verbatim Made In Japan which is TY media , avoid these

Your bese bet is indeed Verbatim DVD+R or DVD-R , either is guaranteed to be excellent discs with awesome compatibility and playability and with no degradation whatsoever .

Act soon as your RitekG05 may “explode” any second

Yea I am avoiding them as much as possible, mainly why I’m choosing 100 packs. I was under the impression the TYG03 and T03 were only in 25 and 50 packs? Or is that wrong?

I have some Verb MCC01RG20 from like 5 years ago that still read perfectly so it’s definitely some MCC I’m after.

Are either the + or - better in my particular drive, do you know?

Also, is the H54L hardware identical to the H55L so now I actually have pretty much a true H55L (so I can compare with the H55N/L thread on here?)

Verbatim media although slightly dearer, maybe.
From SVP, they state the media codes.
Very good backup service too.
LG’s in general prefer + media in my experience.
However this is marginal & should not be a deciding factor.

Ya I order my DL from SVP but it works out quite a fair bit more expensive in this case. Due to more expensive 50 packs and postage on top. Scan is £17 for 100 with free City Link delivery (for Hexus members).

So is it true that 100 packs don’t contain the Taiyo’s? If so, then media codes won’t be needed anyway

Oh and also SVP only has printable MCC004 and it’s very dear at £13 per 50. I’m in favour of non-printables.

I would assume that you’re correct.
All the 100 disc tubs of + media I have seen. Have been MCC 004 (either MIT or MII).
Ihave only seen TY in 50’s.

I’d go for MCC03RG20 or MCC004 but not the made in japan as your chance of getting a bad batch increases.

SVP.CO.UK also have some good selections of discs.

I’ve used CMC MAG AE1 with good results before and they don’t degrade:

I’m not too worried with the bad scan things. Not that I can do scans with my drives anyway… but as long as the TRT is ok and they don’t degrade, they should be good enough for me

Good luck with them. Even if they are TY T03 discs, they may still be good. If you burn @ 8x I’m fairly sure they will be alright. Also, since you’re just doing TRT, it will much easier to satisfy you

Some people obsess and get a little upset if their new batch scans with 2000 PIF and their old one scanned with less than 200. I personally don’t care as long as it works flawlessly and the PIF aren’t located all in one spot.

Don’t forget Staples and PC World currently have BOGOF on Verb 50pk at present @ £14.99 and £13.99 Respectively.

You will be able to see yourself where they were made.

I think the PC world offer may finish today or tomorrow though.

They’re both quite far away and I don’t drive so can’t really get there…
