I just posted the article PlayStation Portable struggles beyond video games market.

Up until recent years, handheld game consoles had one and only one purpose - The ability to play games on the move. This of course has changed considerably when Sony...

How can the PSP possible compete with an iPod? It has no HDD and the average users memory card size (1GB) is hardly sufficient for a large library of titles. Sony should have foreseen this and included a 20-30GB HDD in the PSP from day one. They then could easily have pioneered a music/video download service using the PS3.

Glad i sold mine, talk about style over content.

If they truly wanted a portable entertainment device they should have developed it around their Palm devices, this way they could have had a device that could not only play games but surf the internet right from the get-go. As far as they should have had a HDD from the get go to compete with an iPod, I don’t know, how much memory do one of those UMD’s have? They could sell blank UMD’s that could be written to with the PSP (had they included a UMD writer drive and not just a rom drive with the PSP). Perhaps the UMD drive could make up some of the difference between not having a HDD, I don’t know. Anyway, I do agree with what has been said previously, essentially Sony did not do their homework on the PSP prior to releasing it, now they’re trying to kludge the thing to make something from it that it clearly was not meant to do.

I still don’t know what the heck Sony is thinking…why would I want to download and pay good money for movies when I can rip and transcode them from DVD’s I have already purchased??? Why don’t they just sell the PSP and the games and provide software or an OS that lets us do whatever the heck we want to with it? That would provide folks with a compelling reason to buy one… Oh, yeah…I forgot…this is Sony…

hdd with sony was unthinkable back in psp development…they first did not even want to support mp3 because of piracy fears (sony owns libraries of media) it’s even amazing that psp is doing fine on game front. with typical sony’s skin-deep-dumb-ergonomics made very difficult to enjoy games…most games are pretty bad, too. if i have to list few… painful to use analog stick, very slow umd drive, reflective & easy to be scratched screen, porn to be broken umd drive…etc yeah…memory stick sucks big time, too
