I'm interested in backing up my Playstation 2 games, does anyone have any information regarding the utilities/software that I'll need?
There are lots of how toos out there. Just search for them.
I use nero 188.8.131.52 cd disc to disc copy for the cd type games and dvd decrypter iso mode for the dvd ones.
so you don't need amod-chip?

Yes, you do need a mod chip...but that is just the hardware part for the PS2...
what mod chips do you guys use?
and have you guys had any problems with the mod chips?
i use a messiah1 but the messiah2 is meant to be better. My games will load about 90% on the first attemt and 99% on the second attempt.
I use messiah 2 also works great backup programs i have used for dvd based ps2 games are dvd decryptor, nero, alcohol, recordnow max all work great and for cd based i use clonecd or alcohol....
is it better to burn the games at lower write speeds?
Depends really only trail and error will tell you for certain if it works or if it doesn't but personally I only copy CD's @ 16x and DVD's at 2x this is not the limit of my drives but I like reliable backups that will last and this seems to work best for my PS2.
I have always burnt dvd-r at 4x and I haven't had any problems (well I have but that was because of poor media - use reitek go4)
