Hi,

I tried to play a dvd disc -RW, written in AVI format. Why can’t I use my existing DVD burner to play this disc? Is there a burner that will play AVI discs without having to convert them?

A dvd media cannot be “written in AVI format”!
You seem to be really confused…

Read the basics about DVD media first: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Hardware_Software/2003/DVDFormatsExplained.asp

An .avi file is normally encoded either as DivX or XviD. Windows Media Player can usually play those files IF you selected DivX as one of the supported video formats so the codec was installed. Try opening WMP first and then navigating to the .avi file as the play source.

Also, most DVD player programs such as WinDVD can play .avi files on your computer.

And you can always go to http://www.divx.com and get a free player and codec.

If you are asking about playing an .avi on a stand-alone DVD player or recorder, that’s a different matter. Most of them can’t play an .avi. Check to see if yours supports DivX. If it doesn’t, it won’t play the .avi.

If you want to play the disc on your PC, give VLC a try. It’s free, and an excellent piece of software.

BTW, welcome to the forum
