Pioneer to release DVD±R/RW writer?

It’s only some quite unreliable rumours (so don’t send your complaints to me if it turns out to be pure BS  ):

I still think, from my hands-on testing of the drive they sent to me, the Accesstek still has some issues. What can you expect from engineering samples though… NEC and PIONEER’s Duals look strong though

I’ve tested a production ND-1300A and a SAMPLE DVR-106D and have to say so far the NEC is the better of the bunch, with Pioneer about 90% complete, and Accesstek still resolving problems.

Just had details that the DVR-106 will be capable of +R & -R writing and will be available within the next month. I am so far unable to find any details as to the writing speed but I doubt it will be much faster than the 105.

I have double checked my source which is very reliable and I am assured that it will be +R -R

In NTI’s latest list of supported drives you’ll find the Pioneer DVR-106D. I wonder what that D stands for?

On the same topic is also this post by Kenshin:

The Computer Times of South Korea reports that Pioneer is going to release DVD+RW writer drives in June.

well as long as theyre cheap, i’m waiting for the NEC to reach the UK, however i think i may have found a Sony DRU 500A for under £200

#3

More dual drives means more competition means lower prices. :stuck_out_tongue:

#4

wow, another dual burner?? that’s goin to bring some serious competition!!

Of course I have no idea if this really is related to the supported formats of the burner but thought it was quite interesting…

Pioneer Japan Press release

#7

Some people got so angry whenever I suggested the possibility of Pioneer producing DVD+R/+RW drives.

Pioneer Supports DVD+RW
The Computer Times of South Korea reports that Pioneer is going to release DVD+RW writer drives in June. Both Samsung and LG will be a little faster than that.

It’s not yet sure whether Pioneer will be faster than Samsung and LG though I’ve heard from Samsung that it has no firm source for DVD+R/+RW solution. 10,000 units a month sounds too few.

#8

Looks like Pioneer likes the +R/+RW format  But now they have to pay royalties, because there aren’t from the DVD+RW Alliance.

How face-losing.

maybe. but these are the hottest thing right now, so from a financial standpoint, smart move. isn’t sony part of the +R camp too?

Sony is somewhere in the middle. It is Ricoh or Philips that is most dedicated to DVD+RW. Since 4x DVD+RW is entering the end user market, it may be worthwhile to observe how the 4x rewritable speed is going to impact the competition among the various optical storage formats.

If it were such a smart move, they would have
done it much sooner (and the same for the +
die-hard companies). The money you can get
now from dual burners is nothing compared to
what is at stake in the long term, and such
announcements are just catastrophic for the
future of - format.

doesn’t bother me too much. a lot of -R drives out there, big user base. also, by the time it is catastrophic, tiem to upgrade drives anyway, or maybe even new tech (blu-ray) will be out.

It should bother Pioneer very much though.
