Pioneer dvr-710 burning problems

Hello everyone,

I just recently bought a pioneer dvr-710 dvd burner and I tried to burn two dvdr+ data discs with nero burning rom. The first try was set to burn at 12x and got to 67% and froze. 2nd try was set to 8x and to 35% and I decided to cancel because it was going to take like 40 minutes to burn. Here is some info that might help indicate my problem

<b>Dvd Burner:</b> Pioneer Dvr-710 aka Dvr-111D
<b>Mode:</b> Cable Select
<b>Driver:</b> Microsoft 5.1.25.35.0 created 7/1/2001(win xp automatically chose this)
<b>Status:</b> Device working properly according to device manager properties.
<b>DVD Media:</b> Memerox 16x 4.7GB dvdr+ discs.
<b>Burning Software:</b> Nero Burning rom 6.6.1.4

<b>-Computer Specs-</b>

<b>Processor:</b> AMD Athlon xp 2600+
<b>Memory:</b> 768MB DDR400
<b>OS:</b> Windows XP SP2

<b>Performance notes:</b>

hard drive just defraged with Diskeeper v10.

<b>Extra notes:</b>

While trying to burn data dvdr in nero I noticed buffer was getting down all the way to 10% ! I know on my cd writer it would only go down to 90% or so.
Also in device manager a new entry for “VL7899F HLI100Z SCSI cd-rom device” is now showing up. I don’t have a SCSI drive nor a Mother Board that supports SCSI, so I don’t know why this is showing up?

I would also like to add that I can play dvd movies and read cdr discs with this drive. Just cant burn properly. I noticed that the ide cable wont fit perfectly well in the back like on my other cd burner? Its a regular ide ribbon cable. It looks like it should fit but one side goes in further than the other. Does this drive require a different cable or something?

Well I keep discovering new things… I just looked through my ide controller settings to see what mode they were in and found this.

Primary IDE Channel:
Device 0: Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA2
Deivce 1: Current Transfer Mode - Ultra DMA4

Secondary IDE Channel:
Device 0: Current Transfer Mode - PIO
Device 1: Current Transfer Mode - Not Applicable

It’s quite poossible that the Memorex media is the problem. These can be highly variable & are often poor quality.

The Pioneers do require 80wire IDE cables & often it’s best to make the 111D the master device.

Is this the Pioneer? Why don’t you install it as Master on the Secondary IDE Channel?

Device 0: Current Transfer Mode - PIO

What’s installed here? If it’s a hard disk you’re burning data from, this means trouble (can’t keep up and buffer will drop).

“VL7899F HLI100Z SCSI cd-rom device”

This is a “virtual” drive you’ve installed (in software).

Well I changed out the ide cable to one of those newer cables that are real skinny and black but the end connections are regular which fits perfectly now. I think it is 40pin/80 wire? Also I now have my ide IDE controllers set like so.

Primary IDE Master: Pioneer DVD-RW Ultra DMA mode 4

Secondary IDE MASTER: ST366020A( My Hard drive) Ultra DMA Mode 5

Note: After Burn process failed again in Nero(3rd time) My hard drive dropped back down to PIO mode… The only way to fix this I think is to delete ide controller thats running in PIO mode and then reboot to set it back to ultra dma mode 5(for hard drive).

UDMA4 and 5 is correct now, but the standard way of doing things is to put the hard disk on Primary and the optical drive on Secondary (unless you have a SATA hard drive, in which case the channel numbering may be different).

There must be a reason for the channel dropping back to PIO mode though, so you may still want to try with another ribbon cable. Windows will do this when it finds too many data transmission errors on the channel.

well I finally figured out atleast part of the solution. I turned off this registry tweak I had on that had the OS running in direct memory with no page filing and I have 768MB of DDR memory. Once I turned that off and restarted I got Ultra DMA 5 mode back on HD and I successfully burned a dvdr+ 4.7 data disc at 12x. The buffer percent level in nero did drop down to 10% one time for like 5-10 seconds and the drive had to rest then it spun back up and continued writing though.

So anyways, I did get a dvdr+ data disc to burn correctly in nero at around 8-9 minutes which I think is normal for my specs. However, I am limited in nero now to a maximum burn speed of 12x. Anyone know the reason for this? Thanks for everyone’s help so far.

One more tip: you’re not burning data from a hard drive installed on the same cable as the Pioneer, are you? This would also cause the buffer underrun.

Max burn speed you can select in Nero is determined by the disc type and the burner’s firmware, so there’s nothing you can do to change this. Make sure your firmware and Nero version are up to date though.

No, the Hard drive is on its own IDE cable to mboard and the dvd burner is connected to mboard seperately. So it is connected right besides the fact that most people run hard drive on primary and cd-rom devices on secondary. I now do have something to show you.

<a href=“http://photobucket.com/” target="_blank"><img src=“http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/aod2002/Nerograph.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting”></a>

This is with the memorex media and I also found this info.

<a href=“http://photobucket.com/” target="_blank"><img src=“http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m189/aod2002/discinfo.jpg” border=“0” alt=“Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting”></a>

So it looks like it is the media limiting me down to 12x even though the package claims “16x.” I know which type of media not to buy again…

A TDK PRO dvdr- my friend burnt me read out to 16x and had a average of 12.02X compared to the 8.97X above.

I do have one more question though. I can’t use the “Disc Quality” function in Nero cd-dvd speed. The start button is greyed out?

Download the latest version of CD/DVD Speed at cdspeed2000.com. It includes the Pio 111D as a supported drive. It however is not an entirely accurate scanning drive.

wow the memorex dvdr+ got a maximum of 50 pi errors and was consistent along the graph(the higher the speed a the higher the pi errors). Overall score was a 95%. It went up to like 3.02x at the end.

The Pio reports unusually high PIE’s.

OK… So I thought I had everything working right and just now I got an other coaster… This time it got up to a certain file and nero said, “Error Reading Data” and then the burn failed.

I know for a fact that my modes are still correct. Pioneer dvr-710 is still at UDMA mode 4, and hard drive still at UDMA mode 5. I burnt two copies before this that were 100% successful. Does anyone have any ideas why I would still get a failing burn? Thanks.

<b>Edit:</b> so I tried to burn the dvdr+ again with a bigger(80meg)buffer and it stopped on the same exact video file and said “Error Reading Data” again and burn failed once again. So I’m wondering what would cause a file to not be able to burn? The file is a .avi file and works fine when I play it.

Copy it to another drive and burn from there.

Post a useful info like a logfile, fixing errors with a “salami tactique” is no good idea.

Alright so I found the nerohistory.log file and I found the section where it failed the first time with the error. This is my log for it.
