Pioneer DVR-111D DVD-Video issues

#1

My Pioneer DVR-111D which works fine for reading, ripping and burning steadfastly refuses, as it has from the time I installed it, to play DVD-Video discs. It recognises them all right but when I try to play them it tries to load them then stops all of a sudden. This could of course be PowerDVD’s problem and I have got slightly further with other DVD playing software such as Media Player Classic getting to a menu but then it locked up.

Can anyone tell me what’s going on here?

#2

I’m not an expert, so you should wait for others reply, but maybe…could it be that you are trying to play a DVD with different regional code?
If this is the case, make your drive regional free.

#3

More specifics please:

 • Firmware on 111D

and

 • Specifics on disc - commercial pressed disk ? Region ?

and

 • Specifics on software and codecs - MPC won’t play DVDs without special codecs and DVD support added, for example.

#4

Probably no regioning problem, because the disc wouldn’t even start in any way.

More likely a software issue thing, windvd and powerdvd together installed, as example.

#5

These are region 4 Pressed discs, the drive has firmware version 1.06 and the only dvd playing software installed is PowerDVD.

I’m assuming that MPC is using PowerDVD’s codecs to play the DVD’s and consequently stuffing up.

Actually I think I’ve found the reason it won’t play using Nero Showtime. It tells me that playback is impossible because CSS copy protection failed, presumably also the case in PowerDVD.

Not sure what to do about it though, any ideas?

#8

Maybe you need to re-install powerdvd properly.

Have you scanned the disc for errors by using nero cd dvd speed?

#9

I just reinstalled PowerDVD today but it made no difference and it’s not just one movie disc its all movie discs. They play fine on other drives I have like the LG 4167B/4163B, just not this one.

I was thinking from my findings it must be a firmware issue but its the latest official Pioneer 1.06 so I don’t see why that would be. Maybe I should re-flash it.

#10

And the burner is how connected, as master on an 80 wire cable and running in UDMA4 mode??

#11

It’s connected as a master on it’s own PATA channel using an 80 wire cable and running in UDMA 4 mode.

#12

Then this should be a driver/codec problem.

#13

It seems to be something to do with region coding after all, since I’ve found a region free DVD that works. It’s only discs with region coding that don’t work (ie. 4 or 2,4).

#14

Maybe your drive is just region LOCKED now.

#15

So how would I fix that?

#16

Please post the complete summary output from Discinfo, disable extra tools like Regionkiller or DVDGenie or AnyDVD during that.

Good, it is not locked, but RPC-2.
Anyway, I would update the firmware, yours is at 1.06.

Um, in case you still mean the dvd video playback issue, put the drive into another computer to test it.

That’s the best chance to find out if the drive is duffy or not.
