Pioneer DVR-109 w/ 16x media... no luck

#1

I was buying a new computer and someone recommended the DVR-109… I went with it, only to be disappointed. Using 16x media (Memorex DVD+R, Verbatim DVD-R, and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R) I write more bad discs than good. Reducing the speed does not seem to help. At first I thought it was because I was using a 40-conductor IDE cable, I went out and bought an 80-conductor – no improvement. I thought the drive was defective (I also experienced the problem with the computer crashing at 100% burn) so I sent it back and asked for a replacement – again, no improvement.

:frowning:

CDs seem to burn OK.

I’m thinking about just buying another brand of writer.

From reading around it seems like other ppl have had problems with this drive too. Does 8x media write better? Any solutions?

Nero 6.6.0.13
Asus A8V Delux
Win XP Service Pack 1

#2

Forgot to mention that it reads fine and that I have it connected as Secondary Master with no other drives connected to the cable. In Windows devices it shows as Ultra DMA Mode 4. Nero burns successfully but fails verification.

#3

writing 8x media at 8 or 12x is the only solution on this drive if you don’t want to experience the issue when burning 16x media. I highly recommend -R TYG02 or +R YUDEN000T02. Both write very well in the 109 and can be burned up to 12x max but at Z-CAV.

#4

so this is normal with this drive?

#5

I personally had not such problems with my 109 yet. Burning on 16x media with a 40-wire IDE cable - very bad idea and NOT recommended! No surprise to me that they failed… Connect the drive as MASTER.

I suggest you update your Nero > 6.6.0.16 first.

I’m actually using 8x rated media at 8x and 12x most of all. Good enough for me, fast enough, cheap aswell.

#6

I have already gotten an 80-wire cable - no improvement :frowning:

Today I also went to buy some 8x Sony DVD-R media. Writing at 8x… same thing :frowning:

I’ve tried to call Pioneer support but they’re closed for the weekend. I doubt they’ll be open tomorrow (labor day)

With the amount of $$ I’ve spent on trying different media I could have bought a new drive.

#7

ok for this to happen at 8x is not good. I figured you chatting about the CAV bug with 16x media however 8x Z-CAV media should never pose a problem on this drive.

#8

This is my second 109 drive… this sucks :frowning:

#9

IMO, your other hardware could be the problem here.
2 drives defect? Would be a weird coincidence!

#10

perhaps your hard drives are having a problem feeding your burner with data constant enough to make it a smooth burn? Is the jumper burning radically besides the normal OPC?

#11

MrLip! Chef is right again! It is your system and its interface with the 109. The 109 can be a big ass mean hungry bear to install and get up to speed on some systems. Read the 100s of threads and you will see what you are up against.

Some of the solutions were:
reformat and clean install XP with SP2
80 pin cable
master UMDA4(mandatory master on some systems)Does it say UMDA4
update bios
update windows
reflash burner
check pins on the back of drive
IDE drivers
uninstall DLA and INCD
use only the 109 on a cable by its self
safe boot and delete extra hardware
crossflash with 2.1 and load the current quiet drive
settings in device manager for IDE and drives
bios settings
flash in safe boot
uninstall drive and reinstall both hardware and software
Check jumpers on back of drive
check IDE cable is installed correctly

Chef and all please add to this list, but check the other threads. I think 90% of the supposedly bad drives were software/hardware conflicts.

the info under “Media Specific” doesnt look normal your burner’s firmware probably dont support the mediacode try another media brand , also update to 1.58 firmware

#14

1.58 is a good idea.

Because you are using an ISO and this has a size of 4489mb, how much can your media hold?
If you can, you should test it with DVDDecrypter, the best choice for ISOs and images.

#15

I talked to Pioneer tech support. They said they think it’s a faulty drive. Now I have to mail it to them (that means pay for shipping :frowning: ) and be without a drive for about a month. I’m thinking about BenQ…

#16

What does that “Queue again later” mean ?

I had a kind`a promlems with my new Pioneer-110 DBK
it can burn succesfully at different conditions and not

just stops writing in the middle of progress and nothing to do except of rebooting and trash the media (can safe at miltisesion but not all disks)

made all possible things I suppose (there could be a huge list): even replased the drive at selles service…

  • placed the drive as master on secondary IDE and other combinations
  • flashed newer firmware
  • cleaned windows
  • deleted all other burning software and virual drives
  • made some tests and so on (burst test at 35-40 it`s ok)
  • of course there is UDMA-4 and so on
  • trieed to burn with other progs unloaded and not…
  • messed with all of that ASPI stuff and more :iagree:
all seems strange _ half of my media wasted :frowning:

#17

The Pios are very sensitive to over speeding media. I usually burn at 8X or 12X if I feel lucky! These days I use my very fast 109/A09XL as a speed reader and my 1640 as a burner. But even the 1640 burns most of my media faster at 12x and 8X than 16X.
So what speed and what media?

#18

argggh,
tried at 4x burn and it fails too //…

#19

In this case, RMA the drive.

PS: You tried what 4x media?

#20

Digitex and Sony … no matter but fun was trying to burn a 2MB session with Invalid Block error about 15-20 times with no success till restarted system
