The Pioneer BDRW drives have not been capable of scanning for some time. I think there were some earlier models, but that ability has been removed. Right now, your best bet would be a Samsung or LiteOn model for quality scanning. LiteOn’s iHBS112 seems to be popular, though there is a glitch in the scanning capabilities of newer hardware versions that may require a flick of the wrist (so to speak) to initiate the scan. Other manufacturers (Asus, Sony, Plextor) rebadge LiteOn drives, and depending on the age of the stock and firmware tuning, scanning may be flawlessly easy. More information about this can be found around the forums.
The Samsung drives are less popular, so you won’t have as many near comparisons with others, but you could still get consistency for your own uses.
However, the Pioneer should be quite functional otherwise, if you decide scanning is not a necessity.
