Hey guys first time poster

Ok right i need some help im so worried, this is the first forum that ive found where someone has a kind of a solution but for a different drive hopefully theres one for my Pioneer 109 ok below is the thread with the problem ive got but its for a LightOn drive:

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=84122

My problem is i downloaded the Firmware 1.50 from Pioneer site ealier for my 109 drive i used DVRupdate to try and upgrade my firmware and i got the following when i loaded the correct upgrade files :

Step 1: to kernel mode, OK!
Step 2: send, . . . .OK!
Step 3: wait . . . . . . . . . . OK!
Step 4: send, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . OK!
Step 5: flash and wait about 30 sec, Error, because Scsi error with ASC:4C ASCQ:1!

This stayed on the screen for 5mins and i thought it finished or something so i closed the programe. I pressed the close Tray button on the DVD-RW drive and there was no power it wouldn’t close so i pushed the tray in. I restarted my PC and windows XP said a new CD drive is detected and i need to restart so i did.

I logged in again the drive still has no power cause the light still didnt come on and the tray isnt responding to me pressing the open button. Thats about it now but XP is detecting a CD drive present it dosnt say DVD-RW but atleast its detecting something.

On that thread above the issue is very simular im hoping praying someone can help me i only brought the dvd-rw over a month ago on ebay there must be someone to reactivate it i mean if people can reactivate a lighton there has to be a way to do it with a pioneer 109 PLEASE HELP im so worried now :frowning:

Download DVRFlash and try again. Please sent us the entire log if it fails.

Before you flash, if you’ve got another device on the Secondary IDE bus, remove it and make sure that the DVR-109 is set as Master. This is just to avoid problems with that bus… Once you’ve succeeded, you can put it back to normal.

And make sure the drive is on a 80wire IDE cable set to UDMA4 mode.

Make sure you have the correct drive selected in dvrupdate. Also use the 1.57 A09 FW!

You have not crossflashed if the quiet drive utility does not show. Check the other threads out!

  1. Once I cross flashed it was a perfect drive.

From the Pioneer 109 forum

Download the 109v1.57 firmware

Extract the files and delete the Pioneer upgrade (UPGR109.exe). You will be left with 2 files, R9100009.157 & R9100109.157.

Download DVRupdate 0.9

Extract DVRupdate 0.9.exe to the same folder as the 2 files above.

Run DVRupdate 0.9 and do the following:

  1. Select your drive from the ‘Device’ drop down box
  2. Select the Kernel file by clicking the folder icon to the right of the ‘Kernel’ field. The correct file will automatically be selected if you have run DVRupdate from the same folder as the R9100009.157 & R9100109.157 files.
  3. Select the Normal file by clicking the folder icon to the right of the ‘Normal’ field. The correct file will automatically be selected if you have run DVRupdate from the same folder as the R9100009.157 & R9100109.157 files.
  4. Click ‘Start’
The operation takes about a minute. Exit DVRupdate.

Reboot.

Quote from my other thread!

"Please check out the other threads to make sure you have the 109 installed correctly! The 109 is a very nice unit!

Things to check!

  1. master
  2. umda4
  3. 80 pin cable
  4. some mobos will not do any FW flash without the dvr program
  5. some systems will not do a flash without a blank disk in the tray
  6. will not perform correctly on some IDE PCI cards.
  7. on and on and on

And oh yes it is a pain in the butt, but a fine drive once crossflashed to a A09XL."

#7

ept the drive is set to Secondary Master already
Im not sure how to change to umda4 mode or to see if already on it
How to i know if my cable is 80pin?
How can i put a blank disc in when my drive is basically closed and wont open?
How do i know if it wont perform on my IDE PCI cards?

ept the drive is set to Secondary Master already
(good)

Im not sure how to change to umda4 mode or to see if already on it
Check in device manager under system/harware info/also check your system bios when you boot

How to i know if my cable is 80pin?
If it is a newer computer it will have a 80 pin cable! It has twice the wires of a 40 pin and looks obviously diiferent if you have one of the old ones to compare it to.

How can i put a blank disc in when my drive is basically closed and wont open?
Wow! You have a serious issue at this point in time.
Does the drive light up at all and does it show in device manager?

How do i know if it wont perform on my IDE PCI cards?
Unless you added one it should be on the IDE mobo port on your mobo!

#9

We need to make sure your drive is working at this point in time and the system sees it! Device manager and the Bios!
Check with the PIONEER109 forum and also post your problems on the liteon thread you mentioned.
I had to RMA a NEC that was flashed wrong! I would probably be safe to say you need to RMA the unit! But maybe you could get lucky and try one of the utilitys in the other thread!
I am not aware of any utlity that will resurrect a Pio! Ask Flash!

Im not sure about the Umda4 mode part this is what ive got up what do i do next ?
http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/9448/18jh.jpg

My PC is a few years old i just looked in my tower on the back of the Cables it said like 40P, 34P so im taking that means 40pin and 34pin? The highest one i got is 40pin thats already connected to the drive.

Ok well my drives light on the front dosn’t come on neither does the tray open however on device manager it still shows the Pioneer 109 drive also when i boot up it does say - Secondary Master : Pioneer 109 DVD-RW

The IDE cable from my 109 is connected to the mobo in another IDE slot so im guessing theres nothing wrong there

Last time someone posted on that other thread was back at the start of 2004 lol think its a bit dead. The software they used was something called mtkflash or mtkwinflash but you need some sort of .BIN file but for a pioneer drive not sure if there is one :S Whats a rma ?

see this dma guide http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616
there is no 80pin ide cable all of em are 40 pin however there are 40 pins with 80 wires and 40 wires
flat 80 wires ide cable : http://www.proffs.nu/images/idecable.jpg
flat 40 wires ide cable : http://www.emaxasp.com/product_images/CB25ATA-10.gif
you can tell by the connector colors, and if its a rounded cable all of em are 80 wires
EDIT just noticed the 40 wires link aint working ,all 3 connectors on a 40 wires cable are black

34 pins is the floppy port

#12

Thanks Phil!

Double click on the 109 icon in device manager and look at its properties and FW.
Not sure you can flash this unit with a 40wire cable! And if your mobo does not support umda4 then the A09XL FW may not be an option for you. You may need to look at your IDE channels in device manager and see where they are set(pio only, umda2,4)!
All my 80pin cables have a blue connector on one end!

#13

ok this is what i get in the properties window: http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/1780/15iv2.jpg

and this is what i get on the details tab i couldn’t find any mention of umda4 in the drop down menu : http://img304.imageshack.us/img304/6674/21ax.jpg

For the Second IDE channel window i got the following The one on the left is what its currently set to the window on the right is the other options i could set: http://img173.imageshack.us/img173/4945/15bs.jpg

#14

pics

#15

OK! You need to try to flash again with 2.1 dvdupdate and make sure you have the correct target tagged!

#16

nice pics but you forgot few things

a) how to reach to that ide channel configuration , for that “ide ata/atapi controllers” should be expanded,i guess some will alredy know that but some might not
b) from what kiis102 said in one of his previous posts the pioneer is on the secondary ide not primary

#17

alright i’ll try and give it a shot

Just a quick note on your pics on my Primary Driver i got Ultra DMA Mode 5 Next to current transfer mode for device 0

Is it DVRupdate 2.1 or DVRFlash 2.1 ?
DVRupdate 0.9 ive got i dont think theres a 2.1 though :S mite be mistaken

#18

right ive downloaded DVRFlash v2.1 > Ive gone into the win32 folder do i just run the DVRFlash file?

#19

Sounds like you have a great computer! Lets hope we can get your pio up!
Sony has a proprietary format! So not all hardware will work on this beast and the 109 is very picky about what it will work with! May be worth a trip to sony.com and look for drivers as well as windows updater!

Make sure your unzipped 1.57 files are in the exact same folder as your flasher.
