I Have A Philips Mrv640 With A Bad Drive I Put A Hp Dvd 400i
And It Will Play Dvds But It Will Not Record The Drive I Took Out Is A Philips Vad 8031/01 Part Number Is 9305-025-83101
Can I Make The Hp Drive Compatble Or Just Scrap The Whole Thing?

Generally speaking, replacing the factory-installed DVD OPU with a heterologous unit in any recorder cannot be guaranteed to work.

If you want some advice, you'll need to know a few more details eg:

1) How old is your machine?
2) Is there a warranty wherever you are?
3) What are the signs of the "bad" drive?

at least 2 and a half years old and iam in the usa no warranty left on unit
it quit working one day would not power up so i opend it up to check fuse.
well it was fine i smelled some thing burnt and it was the drive i opend the drive up and it had burnt spot on the board that the ide and power cable plug in

I'm not sure that would be a good idea. What would you update it with, seeing as there's no clue to what the problem is? IIRC the HP drives are OEM NEC units, and there's no guarantee that the Philips/Magnavox will communicate correctly.

Seeing as you suspect a burnout, have you tried replacing the IDE or drive power cables and rechecking with the original DVD drive unit?

i took the original drive apart and it has a burnt spot in it

has any one put a drive out of a pc in a recorder with success. the oe drive out of the MRV640 is definitely bad
the hp drive I put in plays just fine and fit like a glove but will not record it starts but after 5 seconds it will freezes and the unit powers down
