In case anyone wants a nice universal player for an Xmas gift, 6Ave has been running sales on the Phillips. Price varies, it was as low as $45 last week.

Not really a bargain. The only DVD player I’d consider buying is the Phillips 5990 or 5992 which is also around $50. It has a USB 2.0 port for flash drives or a hard drive so you can watch mpeg, Divx and avi movies. The 5990 even plays Windows media (wmv) files. Also, the 5990 is a 1080p upscaling player. You need a hack (just press a few button combinations on the remote) to make it region-free, but it plays PAL and NTSC.

I’ve had great luck with buying the DVP series refurbs from Philips and giving as gifts (easy option for me to carry my movie collections on HD’s to my relatives, parents, friends place) and for myself.

Free shipping too… these go Out Of Stock OOS often due to SlickDeals and Fat Wallet pointing to both listings from forum listings/hot deals.

I just noticed that this unit is $26 if you apply for the Amazon.com Rewards Visa® Card (not that I have one or plan to apply).

How is Philips these days with firmware upgrades for these units?
Does it play all versions of wmv? I think I was reading about a Toshiba that played flv files, too. I haven’t seen one that plays mp4’s, though.
