Philips DVD8631 wont burn anymore!

Hi all,

My Dell 8400’s DVD8631 was working fine for a few mths, and now all of a sudden, it fails to burn a single dvd (using multiple brand dvr+r’s)! I was wondering if you could advise me what is wrong with it, seeming i have used 4 different kinds of software (Sonic, Nero, etc) but use nero mainly, and it has in the past always worked.

Here are the logs, hopefully some1 can help me!:

I thank you in advance for your help!

Welcome to cdfreaks.

CdRomPeripheral : PHILIPS DVD±RW DVD8631 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
.To start with you have to enable DMA.

BTW, crossposting is not allowed.

ah, sorry for crossposting  i didnt know how to delete my other post, and realised later that this forum section was more relevant.

and dell customer support is aweful, cause i live in the UK, but bought the pc in france via holland, my guarantee isnt valid :expressionless: like, huh?

i will try the dma thing and get back to you!

i checked it, and in “Transfer Mode”, “DMA if Available” is selected, but on the “current transfer mode”, “PIO mode” is the only option…

any ideas?

or where i may be able to get some decent firmware/drivers for this DVD8631? a lot of previous posts i have googled have broken links, or the sites seem to be a bit unscrupulous and not trustworthy

Uninstall the IDE channel drive is connected to (secondary). Restart compu and let windoze install default IDE drivers.

While you are on it, unistall all burning software except for Nero.

We will take care of your other questions later. First you have to get your drive up and burning.

pinto, wont uninstalling my IDE channel drive possibly screw up windows? i only have a primary IDE channel atm
(just checking, im not actually very pc technical! :P)

No it wont.
Your burner is alone on IDE channel. You have a SATA HDD from what I can see.

Proposed action is the simpliest way to restore DMA when windoze reverted drive into PIO mode.

There are other ways, but than you’ll have to go to registry and that is dangerous.

excellent! i did all you said, and reinstalled the newest GD30 philips drivers…and just burned my 1st non-coaster!

its like christmas come early, now i can empty my hard drive and get rid of those annoying windows messages! :stuck_out_tongue: thanks ever so much, hopefully i wont be back after a few more burns :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey there people,

Actually, I seek help for a similar concern, I did post a thread highlighting my concern, but here it is again as the situation has worsened

I have taken out my drive and made it an external drive through a USB enclosure. The secondary IDE channel has another HDD to it.

What do I do to get it burning again? (I uninstalled it and had Windows install it again, but it missed some drivers and now the drive crashes my pc when i try to work with it.

Looking forward to your help and Thanks in advance.

Can someone please help me. I have the same problem as Empathy but I dont know where the log is. I checked the DMA, in “Transfer Mode”, “DMA if Available” is selected on both Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. On the Primary, “Current Transfer Mode” = “Ultra DMA Mode 2” and on the Secondary, “Current Transfer Mode” = “Not Applicable”. Appreciate if someone could help me.
