Philips DVD writer , can't write

I have just installed a Philips DVDR1628K internal drive on my new Dell machine, when I click on My Computer it shows as a DVD-RW, however when I insert a blank DVD it changes to CD-ROM and I can’t use the ‘send to’ option. The drive worked perfectly well in my last Gateway machine, but not in this one, anybody get any idea’s ??

But it will play DVD’s without any problems.

I have upgraded the firmware to the latest available on the Philips website.

Both PC’s have Windows XP installed.

Argh, diuscussed 10.000x times already.

Use a proper burning app!!

Sorry only new to site, don’t know what’s been discussed 10.000 already !!

I have also just tried to copy a DVD with Shink 3.2 and got the following…

Use better media. Verbatim is a good choice.

Nero API version: 6.6.0.17
Using interface version: 6.3.1.4

Upgrade Nero to latest 6.6.1.4

A clean install recommended.

Exactly the points that I would also recommend to fix.

Thanks for the advice and like I said I’m new to the site and still trying to find my way round, hence the crosspost.

;-))

Hi I got DMA on , but it still not writing, does it think it’s a CD writer and not DVD ?

Are you trying to automatically burn (with Nero) from DVD Shrink?
With 6.6.1.4 that doesn’t work, and really there was no particular reason to upgrade from 6.6.0.17 that you originally installed.

Just to explain, there’s a quirk in Windows that it’ll always show the device as a CD when a blank disk is loaded so don’t worry about that and XP will not handle burning to DVDs on it’s own as it does with CDs.

Many thanks for your replies, what should I use to burn with Shrink ?

In Shrink you just disable the automatic burning with Nero (preferences) and when you backup you have the option of Hard Disk Folders, ISO images (if you’re on the NTFS file system).

I’d create an image in a folder I can find easily & burn with ImgBurn (free and great for burning images).
Alternatively burn the hard disk folder files with Nero (Nero Express) directly.

Edit:

You could of course unistall Nero, run the clean tool & then install 6.6.0.18 afresh. This version works fine with Shrink.

I’ve provided the links for you:-

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

It worked fine, many many thanks for your help !!!

You’re welcome (twice) for this and the AVI thread.
