Philips 16x10x40 1610K

I am thinking of buying a Philips 16x10x40 1610K, as it is quite cheap (£70).

I am posting this to get some information. I really want to be able to Clone SD2 cds (at the moment I am limited to patching). I can’t find the drive on the CloneCD web page. The serial number of this drive seems to be later than the ones on the site.

http://www.elby.org/CloneCD/english/
(look for the supported drives section)

If anyone can tell me whether this one’ll support SD2 EFM encoding and what RAW mode it’ll support I’d be greatful.

Thanks

Adam

Almost all older Philips writers support correct EFM encoding… However I wouldn’t recommend a Philips though. I’ve had bad experiences with them and I would rather recommend a Lite-On 24102B which is also cheap but, IMO, superior to the Philips.

So do you think that this one would support EFM or not?

The problem is that the Lite-On drives don’t.

What problems have you had with the Philips ones?

What other drives support EFM?

Thanks

Adam

I think so but I cannot be sure.

Yes they do. The latest Lite-On 24102B supports it. Check here

I had some problems with old Philips writers that used a plastic mechanism to guide the laser. I don’t know if they still do but this mechanism was very weak.

Check www.sd2.does.it or http://www.elby.org/CloneCD/english/cdr_a.htm

Methinks I’ll go for that new LiteOn One then
