PC tuner card. How can it record when switched off?

Just a query really. I am wondering how my computer/tuner card records programmes when switched off, AND unplugged. I asked it to record an episode of a series, and found 4 more recordings when switching on recently, and in the middle of another recording. How on earth does it do that? I have a Dell Studio 540, Windows Vista Home Premium, with Hauppage Win TV HVR-1200.
Many thanks.
