Was Betamax physically compatible with VHS? Perhaps not. Major manufacturers are firmly planning to release drives that can read and write to both Blu-ray and HD DVD types of optical media. There’s no precedent of this level of media fusion. You couldn’t easily use VHS or CD-Audio in computers, either, until very lately, but the first blue laser technology products were invented for higher data density for computer use. As long as end users can use ONE DRIVE to read and write to virtually all kinds of optical media, I don’t think either manufacturers or consumers or stockholders will care much whether one wins or both lose or they devide the market. I mean there’s no sign of anything yet. Let’s just see and wait and hope for the best.
