Just wanting to know if there were ever any firmware updates for drives made by this company.
As for this particular one, I'm probably going to throw it away because it won't open unless there's a disc in it. The clamp disc would barely clear its support with a disc in, so I bent the support down a little.
There's a pair of bumper pads at the back which the tray presses against. they were squashed very thin so I swapped them and rotated them so un sqaushed areas would be in use.
Neither made any difference in it not opening without a disc in. I've run into many older drives that won't open unless a disc is in. They can't overcome the pull of the clamping magnet. Some drives use foam pads the mechanism closes against and those can often be cured by rotating those pads.
The Pan-Int. Ind. Corp 450D has no such pads and I couldn't find anything mechanically wrong, it just blinks its LED and grunts a bit.
Paperclip it open, put a disc in and it'll open and close just fine.
