SOUTH CONNELLSVILLE, Pa. - State welfare officials are investigating reports that children were fed alum pickling salt as punishment for misbehaving at a YMCA day-care center in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Five workers have been suspended, but the YMCA Child Development Center in South Connellsville remains open, said Steven Simon, executive director of the Regional Family YMCA of Laurel Highlands.
“The staffers involved in this situation had been thoroughly investigated and had, to the best of our knowledge, served the YMCA and the Connellsville community responsibly,” Simon said in a statement.
A parent complained that five children had the salt put in their mouths as punishment, Pennsylvania Department of Welfare spokeswoman Stacey Witalec said. Alum pickling salt can cause nausea, vomiting and burns.
Investigators have not said when the children were punished or how old the children were.
“We’ll be going out to the facility doing interviews with the staff as well as doing different on-site investigations, seeing what we can find and if the complaint can be verified,” Witalec said.
