Optical Drive feature profiles?

All optical drives have feature profiles as described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366221(v=vs.85).aspx. I want to ask what exactly mean these profiles. For example, if a drive has IMAPI_PROFILE_TYPE_DVD_PLUS_RW_DUAL (0x2a) that means the drive can read DVD+RW DL discs, can write them or both?

They seem to be related to MMC features. You can find an old version (MMC2) of the MMC documentation here. But it should be possible to also find newer versions of this document

I have found MMC 6 revision 2 here: http://hackipedia.org/Hardware/SCSI/Multimedia/SCSI%20Multimedia%20Commands%20-%206.pdf and I have seen all the profiles but I cannot understand what they mean. As I asked above, if a drive has DVD+RW Dual Layer Profile (002Ah) that means the drive can read DVD+RW DL discs, can write them or both?

In that document you can see, which profiles a drive should support according to certain features. For DVD+RW Dual Layer Profile this (amongst others) includes:
003Ah DVD+RW DL Support for reading and optionally writing DVD+RW DL Basic Format

Feature 003Ah says
If the Write bit is set to one, then the Drive is also capable of background formatting DVD+RW DL discs
according to [DVD+Ref4] and is capable of writing DVD+RW DL discs that have been formatted according to
[DVD+Ref4].

I have read them all and this thread is not talking about them. I am not talking about features. I am talking about profiles, pages 307 - 325. In page 315 DVD+RW Dual Layer Profile B is mentioned. For this one I am talking about. Or HD DVD profiles on pages 322 and 323… can they be used to determine if the device can read or write these types of discs?

In that way, the answer should be a simple no. I think it is sufficient for detecting read support, however for write support you will also need to check features (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366210(v=vs.85).aspx)
